Overview
The Ship Control Engineering (D432) department applies several engineering disciplines to develop, deliver, maintain and support advanced fly-by-wire control systems. Engineering opportunities range from initial system design through development, hardware/software integration, test, delivery, and integration of these systems aboard nuclear submarines.
Our team members exemplify Electric Boat’s core values:
- Value each other
- Behave with integrity and purpose
- Commit to excellence
Control Systems Engineer designs, models, simulates, and optimizes automated systems to ensure safe, efficient performance. These models verify and validate: Maneuvering impacted aspects of Ship Design, casualty response capabilities, control and monitoring algorithms, operational modes and user interface
A Control Systems Engineer on our team typically performs the following types of work:
- Execute work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to make design decisions.
- Creating dynamic mathematical plant models of ocean environment, vehicle motion, and ship systems, to analyze system behavior using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, C++, and Python.
- Creating various control algorithms and filter designs.
- Creating and verifying outer loop and inner loop requirements using simulations.
- Document models, algorithms, and performance predictions in engineering calculations to inform other teams and departments on design decisions and implementation
- Performing Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) simulation to test systems before deployment.
- Integrating hardware (sensors, actuators) with software to meet functional requirements.
- Analyzing existing systems for improvements and troubleshooting production failures
