Job Description

Recreation Attendant

Excellent service is at the heart of everything we do at Spanish Peaks Mountain Club. Our associates are our greatest asset, and we treat them as we do our members—with kindness, humility, and respect.

Spanish Peaks is a private community situated on 3,500 acres at an elevation of approximately 7,700 feet in beautiful Big Sky, Montana. The Club is located approximately 40 miles from Bozeman, Belgrade, and West Yellowstone.

The Recreation Attendant is responsible for providing exceptional member service while supporting daily equipment-rental operations and assisting with the indoor rock wall. This position includes fitting and issuing recreational equipment, processing rentals and returns, inspecting and maintaining equipment, monitoring the climbing area, and helping members safely enjoy the Club’s recreational amenities.

Winter rental equipment may include Nordic skis, backcountry skis, snowshoes, and other seasonal recreation equipment. Rock-wall responsibilities include assisting members with equipment, explaining facility rules, monitoring activity, and providing climbing or belay support.

This is a member-facing position requiring a welcoming attitude, strong attention to safety, and the ability to work independently in an active recreation environment.

Essential Job Functions

  • Welcome members and provide friendly, professional, and knowledgeable service.
  • Assist members with equipment selection, sizing, fitting, rentals, returns, and general questions.
  • Process rental transactions, reservations, waivers, and equipment records accurately.
  • Inspect all equipment before and after use to ensure it is clean, safe, and in good working condition.
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance, including ski waxing, minor repairs, cleaning, organization, and inventory management.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming rental and recreation area.
  • Provide members with information about Club trails, recreation opportunities, equipment use, and current conditions.
  • Assist members with rock-wall equipment, including climbing shoes, harnesses, helmets, ropes, and belay devices.
  • Explain and enforce rock-wall rules, age requirements, safety procedures, and appropriate equipment use.
  • Monitor the climbing area and help maintain a safe environment for climbers, spectators, and staff.
  • Perform belay duties and climbing-wall orientations when properly trained and authorized.
  • Complete daily safety inspections of the climbing wall, ropes, harnesses, carabiners, holds, mats, and related equipment.
  • Immediately report damaged equipment, safety concerns, incidents, or maintenance needs to a supervisor.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures for the rental operation and rock wall.
  • Maintain accurate equipment inventories and notify management when supplies, repairs, or replacements are needed.
  • Support winter trail upkeep and outdoor recreation operations as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate with other Club departments.
  • Maintain member privacy and confidentiality in accordance with private-club standards.
  • Follow all Club safety procedures, emergency-action plans, and risk-management policies.
  • Maintain a positive, professional, and approachable presence during all member interactions.
  • Carry out assigned duties independently and with minimal supervision.

Secondary Job Functions

  • Assist with recreation programs, member activities, special events, and seasonal operations.
  • Support other departments during Club events or periods of high activity.
  • Help prepare recreation spaces and equipment for daily programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Outdoor Pursuits Manager or Director of Outdoor Pursuits.

  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification from an accredited institution is required. Training may be provided as needed.
  • Previous experience in recreation, equipment rentals, climbing gyms, ski operations, hospitality, or private-club operations is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Nordic skiing, backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, or indoor rock climbing is preferred.
  • Previous climbing, belaying, or climbing-wall experience is preferred. Required training and facility-specific certification may be provided.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with fluency in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and member-service skills.
  • Ability to learn rental software, equipment procedures, climbing-wall operations, and safety standards.
