Job Description

Position Summary

Highly skilled craft professional capable of performing all fitting and welding functions required for complex fabricated structures.

Essential Duties

  • Perform advanced fitting, layout, and welding.
  • Execute projects from drawings to final completion.
  • Troubleshoot fabrication and welding issues.
  • Train and mentor junior personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with quality requirements.

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of fabrication practices.
  • Advanced blueprint and layout skills.
  • Leadership and training abilities.
  • Advanced welding certifications preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of welding codes and procedures.
  • Proven ability to perform difficult welds consistently.

Experience

  • 5+ years of structural welding and fitting experience.

Hours

  • Monday – Thursday 6:00am – 4:30pm
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Minimum 5 years of advanced structural welding and fitting experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MIG (GMAW) and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW).
  • Ability to successfully complete company-required weld tests, including 2G, 3G, 4G, and fillet welds.
  • Advanced ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, shop drawings, and fabrication specifications.
  • Ability to independently lay out, fit, align, tack, and weld complex structural steel assemblies.
  • Skilled in using measuring tools, levels, squares, grinders, torches, and other fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to verify dimensions, tolerances, angles, and alignment throughout the fabrication process.
  • Strong knowledge of welding procedures, joint preparation, heat control, distortion control, and weld-quality requirements.
  • Ability to identify and correct fitting or welding defects while maintaining production and quality standards.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and assist in training or guiding less-experienced welders and fitters.
  • Must follow all company safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment.
  • Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work Carolina Heavy Steel’s scheduled hours and authorized overtime when required.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and regularly bend, climb, reach, kneel, and lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work safely in an industrial shop environment around fumes, noise, heat, sparks, and moving equipment.
  • Must complete all required pre-employment screenings, training, and certifications.
  • AWS certifications are preferred but may not be required if the applicant demonstrates equivalent experience and successfully passes the company weld test.

Pay is determined based on the applicant’s experience, demonstrated skill level, certifications, and expertise.
