Job Description

DESCRIPTION: Under direction, performs varied tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines in motor vehicles and/or automotive construction equipment; does other related duties as required. NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed. NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday and/or Tuesday through Saturday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Overtime schedules vary with weather and special events. Must be willing to work overtime when directed. RESPONSIBILITIES/REQUIREMENTS:•Successful completion of one (1) year of training in diesel repair at an accredited community college or vocational school.•Repairs and maintains diesel engines using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and machines common to the trade.•Diagnoses trouble, disassembles engines, and examines parts for defects and excessive wear.•Reconditions and replaces parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings, and using engine lathes, boring machines, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments.•May weld and cut parts using arc welding and flame cutting equipment.•May repair and maintain gasoline engines.•May perform a variety of mechanical tasks involved in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and/or construction equipment.•May test drive motor vehicles and/or construction equipment on public streets.•Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.•Must be available to work for prolonged periods and/or overtime during emergencies such as snowstorms and other weather-related events and remain on the job until all repairs have been made.•Have general experience of and be able to drive and operate snow plowing equipment. Including but not limited to hydraulic actuated plow blades mounted to various truck bodies.•Must have basic tools & storage to include ratchet & socket set up to 1/2" drive, screw divers, hammers, wrenches, pliers and other tools commonly used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles & equipmentEXPERIENCE:•High School Diploma or Equivalent•Five (5) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of diesel engines, electrical systems, transmissions and chassis related repair•Must have or be able to Obtain EVT F1 and F2 within 1 year of employment, then obtain F3, F4, F5 and F6 within the next 3 years and maintain all certificationsLICENSE: Appointees must possess a Class “B” Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement or be able to obtain one within a year.KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:•Responsible for the repair or servicing of motor vehicle air conditioners are required to possess and maintain a valid certification as an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician, commensurate with the type of equipment serviced, issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.•Responsible for performing the emissions inspections on diesel-powered vehicles will be required to successfully complete a course of Instruction on Diesel Emission Inspection•Responsible for the operation of industrial trucks (powered forklifts) will be required to obtain and maintain a current certification as a Powered Industrial Truck Operator issued by the New Jersey Occupational Safety and Health Administration.•Responsible for performing emissions repairs to gasoline-fueled vehicles will be required to successfully complete the Emissions Technical Educational Program, and maintain a current certification as an Emissions Repairer Technician.•Responsible for repair and servicing of suspension/steering systems may be required to possess and maintain an Automobile Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Suspension and Steering. •May also be required to obtain ASE certifications in Engine Repair A-1 and Engineer Performance A-8.•Knowledge of diesel motors and equipment and their operation. •Knowledge of causes for motor failure, and the steps necessary to correct the condition.•Ability to obtain, store, record, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.•Ability to keep records.•Ability to analyze mechanical problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.•Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.•Knowledge of After treatment and DEF system operation, common issues, diagnostics and repair.•Ability to communicate with vendors to fulfill parts and supply orders as well as vehicle repairs.•Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance and repair work.•Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.•Ability to take safety precautions in performing the work.•Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.•Ability to maintain simple records.•Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.•Ability to perform manual tasks individually and as part of a team.•Must work well with other co-workersIT IS THE POLICY OF THE TOWNSHIP OF EDISON TO PROVIDE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IN ITS EMPLOYMENT ON THE BASIS OF MERIT AND FITNESS AND WITHOUT DISCRIMINATION BECAUSE OF RACE, RELIGION, COLOR, SEX, POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS, NATIONAL ORIGIN, PHYSICAL OR MENTAL HANDICAP, MARITAL STATUS, AGE OR MILITARY SERVICE.
