The Mechanical Field Engineer serves as the Owner's Representative in the field, supporting quality, commissioning, and construction execution activities on large-scale industrial and mission-critical projects. This role provides technical oversight of mechanical systems installation, startup, testing, and commissioning activities while validating contractor and Commissioning Agent execution against project requirements, design intent, and owner expectations. Operating within complex environments such as data centers, advanced manufacturing facilities, and other critical infrastructure projects, this position acts as a liaison between project stakeholders, helping identify issues, mitigate risk, and ensure systems are installed, tested, and commissioned in accordance with project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent the owner's interests during construction, startup, and commissioning activities.
  • Monitor mechanical system installations for compliance with project specifications, approved submittals, and design intent.
  • Validate Commissioning Agent execution, documentation, and adherence to project commissioning plans.
  • Provide field support during equipment startup, functional testing, integrated systems testing, and turnover activities.
  • Review commissioning procedures, test scripts, deficiency reports, and system readiness documentation.
  • Identify installation, constructability, and operational concerns and coordinate resolution with project stakeholders.
  • Support mechanical system walkdowns, punch list development, and issue resolution efforts.
  • Participate in commissioning meetings, construction meetings, and owner update meetings.
  • Review contractor quality documentation, turnover packages, and system completion reports.
  • Track mechanical system progress and readiness status throughout construction and commissioning phases.
  • Assist with verification of testing activities including TAB (Testing, Adjusting & Balancing), startup reports, pressure testing, flushing, cleaning, and functional performance testing.
  • Coordinate with contractors, design teams, and commissioning personnel to resolve technical issues.
  • Support risk identification and mitigation efforts impacting schedule, quality, safety, and operational readiness.
  • Prepare field observations, status reports, and owner-facing project updates.
  • Promote safe work practices and compliance with project safety requirements.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience supporting mechanical construction, commissioning, QA/QC, or field engineering activities.
  • Experience working on industrial, manufacturing, mission-critical, or large commercial construction projects.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, chilled water, condenser water, plumbing, process piping, or related mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, P&IDs, and submittal documentation.
  • Familiarity with commissioning processes, startup procedures, and system turnover requirements.
  • OSHA 10 certification prior to site arrival.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills with the ability to work across multiple project stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.

  • Familiarity with ASHRAE commissioning guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Experience utilizing commissioning and project management platforms such as ACC, CxAlloy, Procore, BIM 360, or similar systems.
  • Exposure to integrated systems testing and operational readiness programs.
