Position Overview

The Health Teacher provides engaging, standards-based health education to students ages 13–21 who are enrolled in a secure juvenile detention educational program. The teacher promotes lifelong health literacy while addressing the unique social, emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs of justice-involved youth through trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and restorative instructional practices.

The Health Teacher creates a safe, respectful learning environment where students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions regarding physical health, mental health, nutrition, substance use prevention, healthy relationships, personal safety, sexual health, emotional regulation, and overall wellness. The teacher collaborates closely with school clinicians, correctional staff, special education personnel, and community partners to support students' academic success and successful community reintegration.

The role requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering instructional strategies to meet scholars' needs. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Instructional Delivery:

Facilitate multi-grade, multi-content coursework for groups of multi-aged scholars in the classrooms or on their units. Ensure timely delivery and grading of lessons. Adapt lessons to accommodate scholars' varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels.

Classroom Management:

Maintain a positive, structured learning environment for all scholars. Use restorative practices to support scholars' academic and behavioral growth.

Collaboration, Support, and Guidance:

Work closely with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff to ensure delivery of a well-rounded educational program. Participate in team meetings to discuss scholar progress, share strategies, and address academic and/or behavioral concerns. Communicate regularly with staff about scholar needs and achievements.

Compliance and Reporting:

Ensure high-quality instructional materials comply with organizational, facility, district, and federal education regulations. Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook, etc.) on time and in accordance with organizational guidelines.

Other Duties as Assigned:

Tasks that may not directly align with your job description but are vital and serve to maintain a safe and effective teaching and learning environment for scholars and staff.

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)

● Must have or be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain initial certification within 1 year of employment)

● Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred)
