Job Title: Histotechnologist Specialist
Department: Dermatology and Mohs Surgery
Location: Dermatology and Mohs Surgery at Linden Oaks | 10 Hagen Dr. 3rd Floor, Suite 300, Rochester, NY 14625
Hours Per Week: 40
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8-hour shifts, 8:00a - 4:30p
SUMMARY
As a member of the professional medical team, the Histotechnologist Specialist accurately prepares tissue samples for pathologist diagnosis by approved department procedures. They are expected to utilize complex problem-solving skills in resolving tissue processing issues and instrument problems. This position requires exercise of independent judgment, theoretical knowledge and responsibility. They are to follow all regulatory lab requirements. In addition, they will develop the skills necessary to improve the long-term goals of the department including, but not limited to, development and implementation of policies and procedures, and act as the technology consultant and/or key operator of specialized instrumentation. They will also need to participate in rotations that involve grossing of biopsies specimens in the trim room.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Registers specimens in the LIS.
- Processes, embeds, cuts and stains tissue producing high-quality slides.
- Prepares solution for processing tissue and staining of slides.
- Accurately performs special stains and IHC stains.
- Monitors reagents for use in the lab adhering to proper dilutions, expiration dates.
- Performs maintenance on all equipment per procedures.
- Completes required mandatories and continuing education as established by department.
- Monitors reagent and supply inventories. Promptly notifies appropriate person when reaches reorder level.
- Performs frozen sections for pathologist.
- Recognizes, analyzes problems using scientific methods. Reports issues to supervisor or lead tech.
- Participates in maintaining department technical readiness to meet regulatory compliance.
- Complies with all procedures and company policies.
- Assumes responsibility for channeling essential information to the appropriate personnel.
- Participates in department meetings.
- Supports a positive work environment. Works cooperatively with staff and other departments.
- Additional duties and responsibilities as requested by manager.
- Performs gross exam on biopsy specimens and submits specimens for processing accurately maintaining patient/sample identification.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology or related field required or equivalent combination of education and work experience
- At least two years of relevant Medical Technology Laboratory experience required
- New York State Department of Education License or Limited Permit as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Certified Histological Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technician
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience in a Clinical or Pathology Laboratory a benefit, but not required
- Certification by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred, but not required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
PAY RANGE: $30.29 - $45.00
The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
