Job Title

Material Handler- Receiving

FLSA Status:

Non-Exempt

Chester, SC

Summary:

The Material Handler in Receiving is responsible for receiving, inspecting, verifying, and storing incoming raw materials, spare parts, and other inventory items. This position ensures the accuracy of incoming shipments, maintains inventory integrity, supports warehouse operations, and safely transports materials throughout the facility. The Material Handler works closely with Purchasing, Inventory Control, Production, and Warehouse teams to ensure materials are received, documented, and stored in accordance with company procedures and safety standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Unload incoming shipments using forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Perform visual and physical inspections of incoming shipments for damage, shortages, or discrepancies.
  • Compare Bills of Lading, packing slips, and purchase orders against received materials to verify accuracy.
  • Document and report damaged, missing, or incorrect shipments to management and assist with resolution efforts.
  • Receive, verify, and process raw materials, spare parts, and other inventory items into inventory systems.
  • Transport and store materials in designated warehouse and storage locations.
  • Ensure materials are properly labeled, identified, and organized for efficient inventory management.
  • Follow First Expired, First Out (FEFO) inventory practices when handling applicable materials.
  • Maintain accurate receiving records and supporting documentation.
  • Verify shipment information, seals, and receiving documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist with inventory audits, cycle counts, and inventory reconciliation activities.
  • Monitor inventory levels of receiving supplies and notify management of replenishment needs.
  • Assist internal departments with locating and distributing received materials.
  • Train new team members on receiving procedures, material handling practices, and safety requirements as needed.
  • Operate forklifts and other powered industrial equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, inventory discrepancies, and operational issues to management.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with 5S and company standards.
  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Knowledge of receiving, inventory control, and warehouse operations.
  • Familiarity with Bills of Lading, packing slips, and receiving documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality standards.

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Previous warehouse, receiving, inventory control, or material handling experience preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts or other material handling equipment preferred.
  • Manufacturing environment experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, twisting, and stooping throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequent operation of forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Ability to work in warehouse and production environments for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform repetitive material handling tasks throughout the workday.

Work Environment:

  • Daily interaction within a manufacturing and warehouse environment.
  • Exposure to moving equipment, forklift traffic, noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in designated work areas.
  • Fast-paced environment requiring frequent movement and attention to detail.
