Job Description

Description:

Phoenix Operations Group is seeking a Senior Full Stack AWS Engineer with deep AWS expertise to support a federal program by designing, building, and operating scalable, secure, cloud-native applications end to end. This role owns features from the user interface through APIs, data, and infrastructure; partners closely with product and design; and sets technical direction for the team through architecture, code review, and mentorship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain full stack web applications using modern front-end frameworks (React/TypeScript) and back-end services (Node.js, Python, Java, or Go).
  • Architect and implement cloud-native solutions on AWS, including serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions) and containerized (ECS/Fargate, EKS) workloads.
  • Build and manage infrastructure as code using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
  • Design data models and integrate with AWS data services such as RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, S3, and ElastiCache.
  • Build event-driven and asynchronous systems with SQS, SNS, EventBridge, and Kinesis.
  • Own CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, CodePipeline, or similar) enabling frequent, reliable releases.
  • Apply security best practices: IAM least privilege, Cognito/OAuth2 authentication, secrets management, encryption, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Implement observability with CloudWatch, X-Ray, and/or third-party tools; participate in on-call rotation and lead incident resolution and post-mortems.
  • Optimize applications for performance, reliability, and cost (AWS Well-Architected Framework).
  • Lead technical design reviews, write design documents, and drive architectural decisions.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through pairing, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, QA, and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
Requirements: Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with 4+ years in full stack roles.
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience building and operating production systems on AWS.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and Node.js, and in Bash scripting.
  • Experience designing RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs.
  • Solid knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL, DynamoDB).
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code using AWS CloudFormation and AWS CDK.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in GitLab (GitLab CI/CD), and with containers (Docker).
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals: testing, design patterns, distributed systems, and security.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong AWS networking knowledge: VPC design, subnets, routing, Transit Gateway, DNS, and hybrid connectivity (VPN/Direct Connect).
  • Experience configuring firewalls (AWS Network Firewall, security groups, NACLs) and load balancers (ALB, NLB, GWLB).
  • Experience designing and implementing perimeter security (AWS WAF, Shield, ingress/egress inspection, DMZ patterns).
  • Working knowledge of NIST SP 800-53 security controls and how to implement them in AWS.
  • Solid understanding of OpenID Connect (OIDC) and JSON Web Tokens (JWT), including token issuance, validation, signing, and securing APIs with identity providers (e.g., Amazon Cognito).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
Preferred Qualifications
  • AWS certifications: Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional, Developer – Associate, or DevOps Engineer – Professional.
  • Experience with Kubernetes (EKS) and service mesh concepts.
  • Experience with microservices and event-driven architecture at scale.
  • Familiarity with front-end performance, accessibility (WCAG), and design systems.
  • Experience in regulated environments (SOC 2, HIPAA, FedRAMP, PCI).
  • Experience integrating AI/ML or LLM services (e.g., Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker).
  • Experience deploying and operating AWS Landing Zone Accelerator (LZA) for multi-account environments.
  • Familiarity with AWS GovCloud (US) and its service and compliance differences from commercial regions.
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and a modern front-end framework (React preferred; Angular or Vue acceptable).
  • Familiarity with DoD Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide Impact Levels (IL2–IL6), DISA STIGs, and FIPS 140-2/140-3 validated cryptography.
