Job Description

Reports to the Supervisor, Environmental Services. Coordinates the daily activities of Environmental Services staff members to ensure work is performed in an efficient manner. Assists with the daily workload by performing the duties of the Environmental Associate.

Coordinates the daily work activities of Environmental Services staff members by:

  • Providing training and guiding the daily work activities of new and current staff members in proper procedures.
  • Assigning tasks to Environmental Associates.
  • Opening and closing supply areas at shift change.
  • Making rounds of patient care and public work areas on a daily (and as-needed) basis.
  • Carrying the telephone and pager and responding to service requests. Also, prioritizing requests for staff members.
  • Ensuring, daily, that staff members have appropriate supplies available.
  • Maintaining orderliness and cleanliness of supply, equipment and storage areas and reporting broken equipment.
  • Ordering supplies and equipment and putting the supplies away upon receipt.
  • Performing the duties of an Environmental Associate as needed based upon workload and staffing.

Supports the management team by:

  • Performing scheduling functions by taking call-ins and re-arranging work assignments. Also adjusting departmental work schedules.
  • Participating in departmental quality control and quality improvement plans.
  • Assuming a leadership role in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Performing quality assurance inspections in the patient care and public areas on a daily and quarterly basis.
  • Communicating possible problems or needs (for example, scheduling and equipment problems) to the Supervisor.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Must be a minimum of 17 years of age. One year of previous Environmental Services experience is required. Demonstrated leadership skills are preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Requires thorough knowledge and understanding of the Environmental Services operations, policies/procedures and equipment.
  • Demonstrates sufficient leadership and organization skills to elicit cooperation and support from co-workers, supervisors and other Hospital staff members.
  • Requires good communication skills necessary to understand and execute both verbal and written instructions, to read and write legibly, and the ability to read and understand an MSDS sheet.
  • Requires the math skills needed to do basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Requires interpersonal skills necessary to interact tactfully and effectively with co-workers, supervisors, Hospital staff members and the public.
  • Requires the ability to work with personal protective equipment according to OSHA requirements.

Working Conditions

  • Working environment may vary according to area assigned.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. standing/walking for prolonged periods of time, lift, reach, bend, climb ladder) to perform the essential functions of the position.
