Job Description

Teaching Assistant Professor in Creative Writing and First Year Writing/Composition (English Department)

The English Department at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications for an Appointment Stream Teaching Assistant Professor position, shared between the Creative Writing and Composition Programs, to begin the fall semester of 2026. Position appointments are renewable and career advancement is possible based on need, funding, and performance. This is a full-time position outside the tenure stream, requires teaching six 3-credit courses per academic year (typically split between First Year Writing and Creative Writing), does not include summer teaching, and is subject to annual review. The appointment may be bargaining unit eligible.

The department is specifically interested in candidates who have an established track record in successfully teaching both first-year composition courses and introductory and intermediate undergraduate creative writing classes, principally in fiction and genre fiction. Experience teaching in other genres and cross-genre is welcome. Candidates can expect their teaching assignments to be split between creative writing and first-year composition. Candidates should demonstrate an aptitude for service and a willingness to contribute to the mission of the department.

Applicants must hold a terminal degree in Creative Writing, Composition, English, or a related field. High-quality interpersonal and relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in support of an inclusive community are required. Preferred qualifications include a strong record of academic teaching and professional experience; an ability to develop curriculum within broadly defined learning objectives; excellent communication and student feedback skills; and experience mentoring students.

Review of applicants will begin December 1, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. The appointment requires administrative and budgetary approval. The position is scheduled to begin on August 15, 2027.

Teaching Load: 3/3 plus committee or supervisory assignment.

To apply, candidates should submit PDF documents of the following to Pitt Talent Center (http://join.pitt.edu):

  1. Cover letter of 1-2 pp. addressed to Gayle Rogers, Chair.
  2. Current CV and a list of courses taught.
  3. A teaching portfolio that includes a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi and assignments, teaching evaluations by peers, and student surveys, for a minimum of 3 courses.
