Job Summary

Merritt Precision is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Mold Detail Technician to join our composites tooling team. This role plays a key part in the mold-building process by ensuring all surfaces are finished to the highest quality standards. The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail, proficiency in working with fiberglass materials, and a commitment to craftsmanship and safety.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in all stages of mold construction for composite tooling projects
  • Perform high-quality sanding, buffing, and waxing of plugs and molds
  • Measure and accurately mix resin systems with proper catalyst ratios
  • Fabricate molds ranging from simple to complex designs
  • Apply and roll out wet fiberglass materials using hand tools—ensuring consolidation without air voids
  • Spray tooling gelcoat for mold surface applications
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace in compliance with safety standards
  • Follow technical drawings, work instructions, and quality assurance protocols
  • Measure and verify mold-tooling stack-ups (static/dynamic) to assess preloads, clearances, and fits
  • Analyze and troubleshoot mold or part defects, recommending corrective and preventive actions
  • Train and mentor junior team members on mold detailing processes and maintenance best practices

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in mold building or tooling for composites
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience with mold detailing or finishing
  • Prior experience in fiberglass lamination preferred
  • Familiarity with shop tools, equipment, and mechanical measurement techniques
  • Ability to read blueprints and follow detailed specifications
  • Able to work independently and meet production deadlines with minimal supervision

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment
  • Must be able to stand, bend, and reach for extended periods
  • Visual acuity required to identify small surface imperfections or defects
  • Frequent use of arms, hands, and shoulders for sanding, buffing, and waxing
  • Fine motor skills necessary for precision work
  • Must be able to climb in and out of plug interiors
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators when needed
  • Able to safely lift up to 50 lbs as required
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and requires full compliance with our fit-for-duty standards
