Job Summary
Merritt Precision is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Mold Detail Technician to join our composites tooling team. This role plays a key part in the mold-building process by ensuring all surfaces are finished to the highest quality standards. The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail, proficiency in working with fiberglass materials, and a commitment to craftsmanship and safety.
Requirements:Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in all stages of mold construction for composite tooling projects
- Perform high-quality sanding, buffing, and waxing of plugs and molds
- Measure and accurately mix resin systems with proper catalyst ratios
- Fabricate molds ranging from simple to complex designs
- Apply and roll out wet fiberglass materials using hand tools—ensuring consolidation without air voids
- Spray tooling gelcoat for mold surface applications
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace in compliance with safety standards
- Follow technical drawings, work instructions, and quality assurance protocols
- Measure and verify mold-tooling stack-ups (static/dynamic) to assess preloads, clearances, and fits
- Analyze and troubleshoot mold or part defects, recommending corrective and preventive actions
- Train and mentor junior team members on mold detailing processes and maintenance best practices
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in mold building or tooling for composites
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience with mold detailing or finishing
- Prior experience in fiberglass lamination preferred
- Familiarity with shop tools, equipment, and mechanical measurement techniques
- Ability to read blueprints and follow detailed specifications
- Able to work independently and meet production deadlines with minimal supervision
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment
- Must be able to stand, bend, and reach for extended periods
- Visual acuity required to identify small surface imperfections or defects
- Frequent use of arms, hands, and shoulders for sanding, buffing, and waxing
- Fine motor skills necessary for precision work
- Must be able to climb in and out of plug interiors
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators when needed
- Able to safely lift up to 50 lbs as required
- This is a safety-sensitive position and requires full compliance with our fit-for-duty standards
