Position Summary
-
Under the direction of a licensed nurse performs assigned duties and patient care activities. The OB tech observes the patient, helps support emotional needs, and reports observations directly to the licensed nurse.

Previous nursing assistant experience preferred.

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Job Specific Performance Standards

The duties listed below are a summary of the major essential functions of this position. The position may require other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned, and specific functions may change from time to time.
- Administers personal hygiene to patient and changes under pads and beds.
- Assists with turning and positioning patients in bed, getting patients up and ambulating patients when indicated, using good body mechanics and records.
- Obtains and records vital signs.
- Assists in maintaining intake and output records.
- Prepares delivery room with specific instruments, sutures, and supplies for vaginal deliveries. Assists with opening sterile packs and instruments and setting up delivery tables.
- Administers treatments such as: enemas, douche, preps, peri care, cath care, collection of urine specimens, and records as appropriate.
- Assists in labeling and preparation of pathology and laboratory specimens.
- Scrubs for deliveries and assists RN and OB provider as needed.
- Transports dirty instruments to instrument room for cleaning and communicates any problems noted with instrument set. Returns to room for cleaning.
- Escorts patient to unit and orients to room.
- Completes vital signs, weight and other admission information.
- Transports patient and belongings to another unit upon transfer or to lobby upon discharge.
- Responds to patient and visitor needs in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates knowledge and proper use of equipment necessary to perform job function. Ensures malfunctioning equipment is maintained and repaired as needed.
- Transports and distributes supplies and equipment for the unit.
- Assists in maintaining cleanliness of nursing unit, supply areas.
- Uses standard precautions, personal protective equipment, engineering and work practice controls toeliminate or minimize employee exposures.
- Remains calms and follows directions well. Able to handle stressful situations.
- Accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner and uses it as a learning tool to improve skills.
- Documents vital signs, treatments, and procedures accordingly in the computer documentation system.
- Answers telephone to unit, determines nature of call, provides basic information and instruction within scope of position. Records and delivers messages to the proper person on the unit and in other departments as necessary.
