Job Description
Help New Mexico (HELPNM) was created in 1965 by the interdenominational New Mexico Council of Churches to support education in their community. Today, their legacy and impact carry on through HELPNM’s work as a fully-owned subsidiary of CPLC. The Office of Learning and Academic Opportunity (OLAO) provides services to children and families from birth to eight years of age. Our priority is to provide general services related to families in the areas of education, health and social/behavioral development. OLAO also provides an intentional, coordinated approach to strengthening the family unit and combines programming for children and adults in order to build strong and stable families.
OBJECTIVE AND POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible to supervise and monitor the safety of the children in their care; as well as organize mealtimes and snacks for children and to develop schedules and routines to ensure that children have enough physical activity, rest, and playtime. Also, provides a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play. Facilitates children in problem-solving.
SPECIALIZATIONS
This position is non-exempt under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is subject to the Agency’s policies and procedures pertaining to overtime hours and premium pay.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Always supervises and monitors the safety of children in their care.
2. Facilitates meal and snack time for children through family style dining.
3. Assists children to keep good hygiene.
4. Change the diapers of infants and toddlers, preschoolers if necessary.
5. Organize activities or implement a curriculum that allow children to learn about the world and explore interests.
6. Develop schedules and routines to ensure that children have enough physical activity, rest, and playtime.
7. Watch for signs of emotional or developmental problems in children and bring the problems to the attention of the parents and the person in charge of the center.
8. At times keeps records of children’s progress, routines, and interest.
9. Introduce infants/toddlers to basic concepts, such as manners, sharing and taking turns by reading to them, and playing with them.
10. Assist preschool-age children to prepare for kindergarten by playing, solving problems, questioning, and experimenting.
11. Utilize play and other instructional techniques to assist children’s development.
12. Assist older school-age children with homework, if needed.
13. Always provides positive guidance to all children.
14. Observe children to detect signs of illness, injury, issues, developmental, child abuse or child neglect and immediate report to the appropriate authorities.
15. Attends all training opportunities and all staff meetings provided and scheduled.
16. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
17. Adheres to all program and funding regulations, as well as agency and program policies and procedures and service plans.
18. Will abide by the Confidentiality Statement and the Core Values of the program.
19. Performs other duties as assigned and which are deemed necessary or desirable by the program
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
Education/Background:
- High School Diploma/GED AND Child Development Associate (CDA) or must be willing to work towards obtaining a Child Development Associate (CDA) within 6 months of hire required
- Some experience working or volunteering with young children is preferred
- Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) is preferred
- First Aid/CPR Certified or willing to obtain within the first 6-months of employment is required.
- Applicants must obtain Food Handlers card upon hire
- TB Skin Test or chest X-ray
- NM ECECD Background Clearance
