About This Position
The Medical Surgical Department LPN provides care for patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The medical/surgical LPN collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. LPNs work under the direction of Registered Nurses and/or Physicians.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the Registered Nurse or attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.
- Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
- Records patients’ current vital signs.
- Works directly under Registered Nurses, and physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing, routine assessment, and treatments.
- Prepares, administers, and records prescribed medications (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV). Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed nurse.
- Provides routine assessment
- Provides IV therapy.
- Provides wound/incisional care.
- Provides basic, bedside care.
- Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients.
- Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
- Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment \displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
- Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format within the Electronic Health Record.
- Float among various departments as required.
- Demonstrates clear ownership of workplace and patient safety.
- Reports mistakes, near misses, adverse events and quality and safety concerns.
- Participates in the development and implementation of safety and quality improvement activities
- Protects patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance with HIPAA and privacy laws.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
Job Requirements
Education: Graduation from an accredited LPN program required.
Certification/Licensure: Current License as a Practical Nurse in the State of Indiana.
Experience: At least two (2) years of previous experience as an LPN in a hospital setting.
Excellent customer service skills required. Great interpersonal and communications skills required. Basic computer knowledge necessary.
