Job Description

Provide diagnostic assessment and psychotherapeutic interventions to support the well-being of the student population with a focus on the needs of diverse and underrepresented populations in addition to the larger community.



  1. Provide counseling, diagnostic assessment, and crisis intervention to students dealing with mental health and developmental challenges, with a particular focus on students from marginalized populations. Work with on campus and off-campus resources to provide coordinated support to students in need. Provide culturally appropriate individual and group counseling and outreach to diverse and historically marginalized student populations. Provide occasional after-hours emergency and on-call coverage for the counseling center. (55%)
  2. Provide leadership in developing outreach strategies and educational programs, with a particular emphasis on the needs and experiences of BIPOC and underserved populations that are consistent with the mission and outreach plan of the Personal Counseling Center. Provide consultative services in the Center at Moore Hall, as appropriate. Provide consultation/representation of PCC and Student Affairs in various campus initiatives via committee work as assigned, liaison work with various student organizations, including multicultural clubs. Serve as PCC liaison to BMSA and attend club meetings as appropriate. (25%)
  3. Diagnostic assessment and intervention in acute crisis such as risk of suicide, trauma, and/or major campus catastrophe. Provide crisis intervention for students who are experiencing acute emotional distress because of varying emergencies such as trauma (i.e. sexual assault), death, substance use, or who are a danger to themselves or others. Participation in monthly after-hours on-call crisis rotation for the office. (10%)
  4. Provide consultation to PCC staff to enhance cultural agility in clinical service delivery. Develop and implement modules for the clinical training program in coordination with the Associate Director of Training for ongoing seminars on cultural competency in clinical service delivery (to be planned for summer months for upcoming training year). (5%)
  5. Maintain records and clinical information consistent with professional standards and PCC practices. (5%)


MARGINAL DUTIES:

  1. Perform all other duties as may be required.


  • Doctorate in counseling or psychology, or master’s in social work, psychology, or counseling from an accredited institution.
  • Excellent culturally sensitive counseling, crisis intervention, assessment, and communication skills.
  • Highly skilled in working with a college population, including excellent cultural competence and extensive experience working effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability and commitment to work with diverse individuals including race, ethnicity, gender, and gender expression, sexual orientation, and differing abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in developing outreach and prevention services.
  • Mental health license or license eligible in Rhode Island.
  • Experience working with trauma.
  • Experience in college mental health preferred.
