In response to a physician's referral, provides Speech/Language Pathology services according the “Laws governing Speech/Language Pathology services in South Carolina” and within the scope of his/her training, knowledge, and experience. This may include but is not limited to speech/ language/ cognitive/ oral-pharyngeal functioning evaluations; developing, coordinating, and providing effective SLP services; and making appropriate referrals and coordinating care. Will provide direct patient care to individuals of various ages (adolescent to geriatrics) as their expertise allows and caseload demands. Coordinates and provides patient/family education. Participates in educational programs and performs non-patient care responsibilities as assigned. Participates in program development and in the QA program. Consults and coordinates with interdisciplinary team in providing comprehensive treatment. Pursues continuing education and assists in the marketing of SLP services.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Observe infection control, medical, safety precautions.
  • Treat in accordance with recognized effective means of therapy in order to meet therapeutic goals.
  • Treatment plan appropriate for patients’ age, cultural and educational status.
  • Provide consultation/training for other members of the multidisciplinary team in the patient's care.
  • Consult with the physician/clinical dietician concerning diet and feeding in those patients experiencing swallowing disorders when appropriate.
  • Provide appropriate augmentative/alternative methods of communication when appropriate with nonverbal patients.
  • Designs and constructs communication boards for individual's needs.
  • Conduct patient/family training and counseling through regular contact in all settings.
  • Patient/family education and input into the plan of therapy documented on evaluation and as appropriate thereafter.
  • Consult with other professional resources and agencies (home health, skilled nursing facilities, rehab facilities etc.) in assuring transition and carryover.
  • Reassess patient during established time frames or as patient's status changes significantly (medical complications that affect level of functioning, etc.) every 10 therapy days.
  • Demonstrate the ability to properly address the needs of all patients with respect to age regarding assessment, treatment and care, including the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient's needs, a knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatment needed by patients.
  • Shows appropriate clinical judgment.
  • Discharge planning begins at time of SLP evaluation and continues throughout the time treatment is rendered.

Qualifications

  • Current temporary or permanent S.C. license issued by the S.C. Board of Examiners in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competency or an approved Clinical Fellowship Plan from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
  • Certification in CPR and basic life support are due within 90 days of hire and maintained on an ongoing basis.
  • When appropriate, mandatory RQI requirements will be completed every 90 days if employee uses RQI.
