About Us

A full-time Research Technician B position is available in the Hegde laboratory at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. We are a systems immunology lab within the Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) that focuses on the long-range communication between solid cancer inflammation and sites of hematopoiesis i.e. blood cell formation. We study how myeloid cells - chiefly monocytes and granulocytes - are co-opted by tumor inflammation to suppress anti-tumor immune responses or are distorted after rounds of genotoxic therapies (e.g.– chemotherapy, radiation). We have a particular interest in dissecting the early education of myeloid cell progenitors in bone marrow and/or spleen by inflammation. Combining high-dimensional longitudinal profiling of patient tissues with mechanistic studies in mouse models of cancer, our lab aims to understand how inflammatory cues alter the genetic, epigenetic, and metabolic wiring within myeloid cells and their progenitors. Our lab will work closely with clinician-scientists at Einstein and beyond, developing and testing the next generation of myeloid cell-targeted immunotherapies for solid tumors such as pancreatic cancer. Research in the Hegde lab spans themes of hematopoietic stem cell and progenitor cell biology, systems physiology, stress-associated proteostasis, and tumor microenvironment biology. For more information on our research, please see our latest publications:
Hegde S. et al., Nature 2025; and LaMarche N.M. et al., Nature 2024.

The Research Technician will work under the supervision of the PI, Samarth Hegde, with additional guidance from other senior laboratory personnel. The lab is currently comprised of 1 member. The expectation is that the research technician will carry out routine mammalian cell culture, assist in experiments (flow cytometry, microscopy, pathology imaging, PCR, gel electrophoresis), assist with mouse colony genotyping (40 cages weekly), and help with general lab organization + inventory management. This position has no supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The position requires basic understanding of the research goals and involves hypothesis-driven research through reliable execution of pre-defined experimental tasks. The research technician will assist the principal investigator (PI) and senior laboratory personnel in laboratory experiments, mouse colony maintenance, and general laboratory organization. Applicants must be comfortable or open to working with rodents, as the projects will involve mouse handling including genotyping and colony management. Basic knowledge of molecular and biochemical techniques, such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, western blotting, and mammalian cell culture is preferred. Experience with spectral flow cytometry, sequencing-based approaches, or with computational analysis of biological data is a plus.

Career development is a strong priority in the lab, and trainees will have frequent standardized meetings with the PI. If desired, the candidate will develop laboratory technical skills as well as gain on-the-job expertise in data presentation and scientific writing. Mentoring and sponsorship will be tailored to needs of the candidate based on long-term career goals, and periodically re-assessed.

  • Undertake bench experiments under the guidance of the PI or senior personnel.
  • Perform standard molecular and biochemical techniques including PCR and gel electrophoresis.
  • Help organize mouse colony and animal-husbandry related tasks.
  • Ocassionally assist with lab inventory management, including ordering routine supplies
  • Require occasional guidance;
  • Rarely modify technical procedures;
  • Rarely train other lab members;
  • Rarely guide other lab members;
  • A simple / limited understanding of scientific literature and the research goals and rationale is required;
  • Occasionally analyze data;
  • Rarely interpret data;
  • Rarely make written contributions to papers and grant proposals.*

QUALIFICATIONS

    • B.A. or B.S in Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related field
    • Optimal: Immunology background
    • Preferred: 0-2 years prior experience in lab bench work (molecular biology, cellular biology)
  • Good organizational and communication skills are essential.
  • Must be familiar with basic procedures in handling chemicals and standard lab equipment (e.g.- pipettes, centrifuges, PCR machines, basic microscope).
  • Applicants must be comfortable or willing to working with rodents (mice).
  • Basic knowledge of molecular and biochemical techniques, such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, western blotting, and mammalian cell culture is preferred;
  • Preferred: Prior experience with spectral flow cytometry, sequencing-based approaches, and/or computational analysis of biological data.
