Job Description

We are seeking a high-performing Excavator Operator to manage site preparation, trenching, and excavation for residential water, sewer, and gas line projects. This role requires precision operation of compact and mid-sized excavators, a deep understanding of underground utility safety, and the ability to work seamlessly with our plumbing and HVAC teams to ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Precision Operation: Skillfully operate mini-excavators, backhoes, and skid steers to perform trenching, grading, and digging for residential utility lines.
  • Utility Trenching: Excavate trenches for water service lines, sewer lateral repairs/replacements, and gas lines, ensuring proper depth and bedding per code.
  • Site Safety & Locates: Strictly adhere to "Call Before You Dig" (811) requirements. Visually verify utility marks and hand-expose sensitive lines when necessary to prevent strikes.
  • Backfilling & Restoration: Backfill trenches using proper lifts and compaction techniques to prevent future settling; perform basic site restoration to return the customer’s property to a clean state.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform daily pre-trip inspections, greasing, and basic preventative maintenance on machinery. Report any mechanical issues immediately.
  • Project Coordination: Assist the plumbing team with the physical installation of piping or shoring as needed while outside the cab.
  • Code & Safety Compliance: Follow all OSHA excavation standards, including proper sloping, benching, and use of trench shields.
  • Documentation: Accurately log hours, equipment usage, and job site conditions using company-provided technology.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Experience: Proven experience operating excavators and heavy equipment, specifically in tight-access residential environments.
  • Safety Mindset: Comprehensive knowledge of soil types, trench safety, and underground utility protection.
  • Mobility: Valid state-issued Driver’s License and a clean driving record (CDL Class A or B is a significant plus).
  • Technical Skills: Ability to read site plans and follow laser levels or grade stakes.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift up to 70 lbs, work in various weather conditions, and assist with manual labor (shoveling/piping) when not operating equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction Safety Certification.
  • Previous experience specifically in Sewer & Water excavation.
  • Experience hauling equipment using trailers and heavy-duty trucks.
