About This Position

MAJOR FUNCTION AND PURPOSE

To support the SRFR Mechanic Shop in the repair, testing and maintenance of all assigned equipment.

Applications will be reviewed following the closing date of the position.

Anticipated Interview Dates*:

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Fire Service Apprentice Mechanic is responsible for repairing and maintaining apparatus and equipment as assigned by the Shop Operations Manager, or designee
  • Report equipment maintenance and repair needs to the Shop Operations Manager, or designee
  • Purchase supplies and equipment as needed
  • Annual testing of all equipment as assigned
  • Records management including daily time keeping and repair orders
  • Accountability of equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all facilities and equipment as assigned
  • Operation of all safety equipment
  • Courteously and efficiently interact with customers and vendors
  • Cleanliness of the maintenance area and service equipment
  • Maintain continuing education and certifications
  • Communicate and present a positive image of Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue
  • Perform other duties as directed
Work Conditions: Work is performed in a moderately noisy shop environment and in the field, sometimes under emergency conditions. Exposure to mechanical and electrical equipment, solvents and oils.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record; AND
  • Have a minimum Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with airbrake and tanker endorsements or be eligible to become CDL certified within 36 months.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. and enrollment in or completion of a technical program for automotive or diesel technology.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of the position
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds with the assistance of others on occasion.
  • Possess basic hand tools necessary to perform efficiently as a Fire Service Apprentice Mechanic

Certifications required within 24 months of hire or time of hire:

  • ASE Tests
  • A-4 Automobile Steering and Suspension
  • A-5 Brakes
  • T-6 Electrical/Electronic Systems
  • T-4 Truck Brakes
  • T-5 Truck Steering and Suspension
  • EVT Tests
  • E-0 Inspections, Maintenance and Testing of Ambulance
  • F-1 Inspections, Maintenance and Testing of Fire Apparatus

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge and Skills in:

  • Basic knowledge of standard word processing, spreadsheet, and database computer software ensuring accuracy and consistency in entries and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing technology in this area (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Exposure to and elementary understanding of both gas and diesel engines, tune-ups, brakes, water/hydraulic pumps, suspension, steering, drive axles, transmissions, electrical systems, etc.

Abilities:

  • Have the physical and mental capacities to permit accomplishment of assigned duties without endangering themselves or others.
  • Able to maintain effective record keeping.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, tact, courtesy, and patience with difficult internal and external customers.
  • Ability to develop and sustain positive working relationships with all members of the Department.
  • Ability to work with management and accept direction on various projects.
  • Ability to express oneself effectively in all avenues of communication.
  • Ability to observe, understand, utilize and retain on-the-job training.
  • Work requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, to use hands to handle twist and feel, to reach with hands and arms, and to lift and carry. Occasionally, requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending or crawling and handling writing instruments, computers and office supplies which require repetitive arm wrist and hand movement.
