About This Position
Title: General Helper
Purpose: Under general supervision; is responsible for the cleaning and service of fleet, the facility maintenance and/or MTA amenities.
Essential Functions:
Fleet
• Cleans interior and exterior of buses, trucks, and cars including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors, washing windows; cleaning interior and exterior walls, seats, ledges, dash boards, and ceilings in order to maintain a clean appearance and sanitary conditions.
• Performs additional cleaning and maintenance functions, such as removing graffiti, spraying coaches for insects, and decontamination and cleaning of blood and toxins.
• Climbs up and down steps to enter and exit vehicles during course of assignment.
• Picks up trash, lifting, bending, reaching under seats, carries bags of trash from one vehicle to the next; throws full trash bags into trash buggy.
• Operate all company equipment and tools necessary to complete their job including driving and fueling fleet on operating facility lot or property.
• Shampoos upholstery using heavy-duty equipment.
• Mounting tires on rims using company provided equipment.
• Generates and maintains written records of vehicles to which fuel, oil, coolant and other fluids have been added.
• Changing bus tires, including maneuvering tires weighing 200-300 lbs.; twisting and lifting to get into position; using tire impact gun weighing approximately 40 lbs., which causes vibration when in use
Facility and Property
• Picking up trash in the interior or exterior of the entire facility, which includes bending, reaching, carrying trash bag.
• Sweeping, moping floor, pushing broom, lifting bucket to empty water, using floor scrubbing machine
• Steam cleaning bus parts, including picking up radiators, batteries, other parts weighing approximately 50 lbs.; loading and unloading onto pallets
• Moving furniture, tables, boxes, supplies; including lifting, pushing, pulling objects weighing approximately 100 lbs.
• Minor facility repairs and alterations, perform facility inspections, and maintain equipment.
• Moving 55-gallon drums of cleaning solutions, using 2-wheel dollies
• Empties trash out of trash buggy, including reaching down into buggy and lifting large capacity trash bags (to fit 55-gallon drums).
• Lifts and empties oil and antifreeze drain pans (weighing approximately 50 lbs.).
• Cuts grass, using push mower
• Use of weed eater
Amenities
• Emptying of trash receptacles on designated routes, bending, reaching, carrying trash bag.
• Inspection of routes for function of bus stop amenities, reporting any graffiti, sanitary concerns or damage to stop amenities.
• Cleaning of bus stop amenities, including removal of damaged glass.
• Able to use a pressure washer safely and efficiently, as well as any other equipment necessary perform the job.
• Work effectively to assist with the install and removal of signage, building of shelters, including assisting with the lifting of heavy panes of glass, metal benches and bus stop signs.
• Able to work in the public view while maintain an appearance and demeanor that brings credit to this organization.
• Performs related duties as required.
• Operate all company equipment and tools necessary to complete their job.
Follows company safety rules
• Uses appropriate PPE
• Reports unsafe vehicle conditions
• Notifies supervisor of safety hazards
• Must pass drug and alcohol testing provisions for safety sensitive positions as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation, 49 CFR Parts 40 and 655. The person selected for this position may be required to be tested prior to being awarded the job.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must qualify following training and a physical evaluation to assess their ability to learn and continually follow the prescribed ergonomic techniques for doing the following in a safe manner: frequently lift and carry objects weighing an average of 21 lbs. and a maximum of 50 lbs.; continually walk, stand, sit, push, pull, climb steps, balance, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, power-grasp, and turn objects; frequently hold and safely manipulate a variety of hand and electronic tools; and frequently drive buses short distances ,and back-up buses using mirrors. In addition, candidates must possess the physical condition necessary to work outside in all weather conditions; and work with cleaning products, solvents, and bus fluids including diesel fuel, motor oil, and coolant.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the English language at a level necessary to read Company bulletins, instructions, polices, and procedures; fill out required forms and records, and communicate effectively with co-workers; basic arithmetic; and industrial and shop safety rules, regulations, and procedures applicable to a bus maintenance facility.
Licenses/Certifications/Special Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Class D Driver License and meet the district's safe driving standards.
Must be available to work five (5) consecutive days including Saturday and Sunday and/or holidays; as bid.
Must be able to operate floor scrubber, forklift, pressure washer, fuel and fluids dispensers, and other required equipment.
