Job Description

The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing is seeking qualified applicants for the Chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia.


The DNP Nurse Anesthesia program at the University of Pittsburgh prepares students through course work that develops knowledge and skill in anesthesia practice as well as in organizational and leadership skills. The rigorous curriculum features courses addressing the chemistry and physics of anesthesia, advanced pharmacology, advanced physiology and pathophysiology, basic-to-advanced principles of anesthesia care, anesthesia technology, team training, patient safety, and the professional role.


This full-time, tenure- or appointment-stream faculty position can be appointed at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor rank. This leadership faculty position will be responsible for overseeing the overall function of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia.

Faculty responsibilities include teaching, research/scholarship, and service.


Administrative responsibilities will include:
• Liaising with the Office of the Dean and other administrative groups on matters related to department faculty and staff
• Leading Department of Nurse Anesthesia faculty meetings, overseeing the assignment of department courses
• Creating opportunities and providing support for Nurse Anesthesia faculty development activities
• Mentoring faculty in research and quality improvement projects
• Interviewing faculty candidates and providing input on potential contribution to the department in both research and teaching roles, and strategic planning for individual faculty development
• Other duties may be assigned based on department needs.

Minimum Qualifications for Consideration:

• Candidate must be board certified as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and hold an unencumbered license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (or hold an unencumbered multi-state license from a compact state)
• Proven administrative capabilities in leading and managing in academic and curricular activities, including didactic and clinical graduate courses; conducts independent research/scholarship; has leadership skills in: teaching, research/scholarship, and service
• Must meet qualifications for appointment to the University of Pittsburgh, School of Nursing Faculty:

Faculty Requirements in the Appointment Stream (Non-Tenure Stream):

o Assistant Professor – A) An earned doctorate in nursing or a field related to the area of scholarship within the School of Nursing is required. B) Evidence of or potential for a sustained and impactful program of scholarship. C) Evidence of or potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring, and contributing to a learning environment that values evidence-based practice.

o Associate Professor – A) An earned doctorate in nursing or a field related to the area of scholarship within the School of Nursing is required. B) Evidence of a sustained and impactful program of scholarship that is nationally recognized. C) Evidence of excellence in teaching and mentoring, and contributing to a learning environment that values evidence-based practice. D) Evidence of or potential for leadership in the field.

o Professor – A) An earned doctorate in nursing or a field related to the area of scholarship within the School of Nursing is required. B) Evidence of a sustained and impactful program of scholarship that is internationally recognized. C) Evidence of excellence in teaching and mentoring, and contributing to a learning environment that values evidence-based practice. D) Evidence of leadership in the field.

Faculty Requirements in the Tenure Stream:

o Assistant Professor – A) An earned Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nursing or a field related to the research foci within the School of Nursing is required. B) Evidence of promise or potential for a sustained and impactful program of research. C) Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring students.

o Associate Professor – A) An earned Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nursing or a field related to the research foci within the School of Nursing is required. B) Evidence of a sustained and impactful program of research that is nationally recognized. C) Demonstrated mature performance in course and curriculum planning and excellence in teaching and mentoring students and junior faculty members, and in participating in the activities of the University. D) Evidence of potential for leadership in the field.

o Professor – A) An earned Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nursing or a field related to the research foci within the School of Nursing is required. B) Should have superior stature in his or her field through research, writing, professional practice, or leadership in professional and learned organizations, as well as having exceeded the standards described for ranks shown above. C) Evidence of excellence and leadership in teaching and mentoring students and faculty members. D) Evidence of leadership in the field.
