Director of Cyberinfrastructure Position Description

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) is the collective spirit and unifying voice of our nation's tribal colleges and universities (TCUs). AIHEC provides leadership and influences public policy on American Indian and Alaska Native higher education issues through advocacy, research, and programmatic initiatives; promotes and strengthens Indigenous languages, cultures, communities, lands, and tribal nations; and through its unique position, serves member institutions and emerging TCUs.

Position Summary

The Director of Cyberinfrastructure will lead the Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Team as they engage directly with the 34 AIHEC member TCUs on the CI resources that support the campuses’ academic and research activities. They will also provide technical expertise to the AIHEC CI Team, TCU staff, and faculty across a range of CI areas including networking, computing, storage, cybersecurity, and software; and will provide subject matter expertise in the following areas: cyberinfrastructure strategic planning and policy development; campus cyberinfrastructure for small colleges; cybersecurity technologies and policies; federated identity; cloud services; and data sovereignty. This position will be crucial in the identification of cyberinfrastructure solutions for supporting and securing the campus local area and wide area networks, identification of software tools and applications and understanding how to integrate into the campus and user’s environment driven by the TCU faculty research and academic requirements.

This position will report to AIHEC’s Vice President of Sponsored Programs.

This position may either telework remotely or be based out of our Alexandria, VA office.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain a fundamental understanding of TCU campus cyberinfrastructure, regional and national and associated resources. Responsibilities include providing support and leadership for the AIHEC CI Team, establishing, chairing or participating in working groups and community of practice groups; and understanding, educating and applying local, regional, and national cyberinfrastructure resources aligned with the mission and vision of the TCUs.
  • Develop and foster strong relationships with TCU Information Technology staff, support and identify CI needs for research and academic programs and assist with addressing those needs.
  • Engage with TCUs directly to identify emerging CI technologies and strategies that can enable research and education activities for TCUs and Tribal communities.
  • Provide technical coordination with external organizations including Federal agencies and regional research and education networks to support TCUs in more effective CI-enabled research.
  • Using deep CI technical knowledge, developing CI-related proposals, as well as annual and final interim project reports for both AIHEC and the TCUs.
  • Serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) on Federally-funding grant programs, with commensurate experience and knowledge of Federal grants and project management.
  • Lead the AIHEC CI Team by providing coaching, supervisory support and subject-matter expertise to team members.
  • Support the mission of AIHEC by performing other duties as assigned.

Education, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. with an M.S preferred equivalent in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering or related field or equivalent significant experience.
  • Five years of related work experience within cyberinfrastructure technologies and resources, with at least one year of hands-on experience with a CI technology such as networking, storage or computing preferred.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for education.
  • Project management experience, preferably in a science discipline or cyberinfrastructure specific area. At least five years of leadership level experience such as managing a cyberinfrastructure project or team preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, including knowledge of consensus building and group facilitation processes.
  • Capacity to develop and execute long-term technology strategies aligned with AIHEC’s strategic plan.
  • Ability to work on multiple priorities effectively, including organizing, prioritizing, and managing projects.
  • Ability to lead, mentor and motivate technical teams.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with technical and non-technical colleagues and partners.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to read for detail, carefully analyzing and understanding all aspects of a text, including explicit information, implied meanings, and impact.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with intended audiences both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to travel to various work-related locations as needed to fulfill the essential functions of the role, which may include local, domestic, and overnight trips.
  • Must be able to complete all job requirements either with or without accommodation.

Pay and Benefits

  • This role is full-time and eligible for AIHEC’s robust benefits package.
  • Pay Range: $ 140,000 - $150,000 per annum
