About This Position

Project Engineers serve as licensed professionals who exercise engineering judgement in the design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure. This involves the interpretation and application of codes & standards, in accordance with established engineering practice. Municipal infrastructure includes roadways, bridges, buildings, park amenities, shoreline stabilization, utilities, pedestrian & bicycle facilities, and stormwater management systems. Project Engineers may serve in a plan review or capital project design role.


  • Perform engineering design regulatory compliance reviews for private-sector land development projects. Serve as a member of the Technical Review Committee and/or Design Adjustment Committee.
  • Administer official acceptance, encroachment, easement, surety, annexation, and variance applications as a designated representative of the City Engineer.
  • Issue of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) MS4 Program Stormwater Permits. Perform compliance inspections, develop punchlists, and oversee projects through Certificate of Occupancy.



Education:

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related engineering field.

Experience:

Three (3) years of progressively responsible related engineering experience.

Other requirements:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles and related computations, regulations, computer software, reference manuals, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant federal, state, and local laws, codes, standards, and regulations. Support municipal emergency management operations.

**Applicants who do not have a Professional Engineering license may indicate their ability to obtain the licensure within 18 months in the supplemental questionnaire. The City of Wilmington will invest in the certification costs if an applicant is hired who is not yet licensed.**


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Exerts up to 10 lbs. occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position generally requires work indoors/office setting.
