About This Position

Position Summary:
The Academic Advisor for Nursing Students serves as a dedicated advisor to nursing students, guiding them throughout their academic journey and ensuring proper progression through the nursing program. This role is responsible for comprehensive academic advising, file management, registration support, and the development of student progression plans. The advisor will also engage with prospective students and their families to provide information about the nursing program, assist with recruitment efforts, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of academic and recruitment strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Academic Advising:
    • Provide one-on-one academic advising for assigned nursing students, including scheduled and walk-in appointments, as well as group advising sessions.
    • Assist students with course selection, program progression plans, dual major/minor degree requirements, and other academic matters.
    • Communicate regularly with nursing students to ensure they are aware of program policies, curriculum requirements, and academic expectations.
  • File and Data Management:
    • Maintain and update student records in electronic systems (DegreeWorks, Starfish, student worksheets) for accurate documentation of academic progress.
    • Conduct routine audits of student records to ensure accurate data on students' academic standing, progression, and graduation eligibility.
    • Process and track applications, transcripts, and other student-related documents. Ensure timely receipt of required information and notify applicants as needed.
  • Program and Enrollment Tracking:
    • Track and report summary data on prospective, admitted, and enrolled students, including inactive students, to keep leadership (Director of Student Services, Assistant Deans, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, and Dean) informed of nursing enrollment trends.
    • Assist in the recruitment of prospective students and provide input for the annual recruitment plan for the School of Nursing.
  • Student Registration:
    • Oversee the registration of nursing students for classes each term, ensuring they are enrolled in courses that align with their academic plans and requirements.
    • Advise students on course selection to meet their degree and program requirements, including those pursuing dual majors or minors.
  • Recruitment and Outreach:
    • Participate in recruitment activities such as nursing Explore Day, Preview SIUE, and other events to engage with prospective students and families.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Student Services to coordinate recruitment efforts and events.
  • General Support:
    • Work closely with colleagues in the School of Nursing and the wider university community to ensure effective advising and student services.
    • Participate in university and School of Nursing events as needed.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the School of Nursing.
Salary Information
Academic Advisor I: $42,500
Academic Advisor II: $45,500

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in a field with experience in admissions and/or advisement and/or counseling.
  • Proficiency in computer record keeping skills, ability to work effectively with high volumes of students, faculty, and administration, and demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the position are essential.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Additional Information: This position does not offer work authorization sponsorship. International students at SIUE on F-1 or J-1 visas are not eligible for full-time or part-time civil service positions with permanent status. F-1 and J-1 visa holders must be enrolled full-time and can only apply for temporary part-time roles working 20 hours or less per week during spring and fall semesters, such as student worker positions, assistantships, and civil service extra help roles. SIUE is a state university, and it's important to highlight that benefits from state-sponsored plans may not be accessible to individuals on F1 or J1 visas.
