About This Position
The hiring range for this position is $40,897.80 (minimum salary) to $56,322.49 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications.
The purpose of this position is to maintain and inspect water valves in the City’s water system and provide leak detection for water leaks and main breaks. This position assists crews in the day-to-day maintenance and construction of Water Infrastructure operations. This position also assists the water treatment and wastewater treatment facilities with maintenance and inspection of valves. Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of water and sewer utilities.
The work consists of related duties in the operation and maintenance of leak detection and valve equipment, and coordinating with outside contractors for valve assessment and maintenance. Work performed in inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
Major Duties
- Maintains and inspects water and sewer valves
- Provides leak detection for water leaks and main breaks.
- Maintains leak detection and valve maintenance equipment.
- Assists crews with valve locations.
- Provide accurate record keeping of valve maintenance.
- Assists with construction and maintenance operations as needed.
- Provides valve maintenance and inspection for other departments as needed.
- Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Guidelines
- Guidelines include city ordinances, policies, and procedures, relevant federal and state laws and regulations, OSHA standards, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
Supervisory/Management Responsibility
- This position has direct supervision over individuals assisting in valve maintenance and leak detection.
Education/Experience Requirements
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Prefer Water Distribution and Wastewater Collections Certifications.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid CDL driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for all equipment and vehicles utilized by these divisions.
Knowledge Requirements
- Ability to obtain an "A" Water Distribution and "IV" Wastewater Collections Certifications.
- Knowledge of the sanitary sewer collection system and the water distribution system.
- Knowledge of state laws and regulations concerning sanitary sewer rights-of-way.
- Knowledge of state laws and regulations concerning blue line streams.
- Knowledge of all applicable city codes and ordinances.
- Knowledge of construction and demolition of buildings.
- Skill in landscaping yards.
- Skill in the operation of equipment used for valve maintenance and leak detection.
- Skill in planning, organizing, and prioritizing work.
- Skill in performing mathematical computations.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of relevant safety procedures and guidelines.
- Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
- Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather, while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.
- May require the use of protective devices.
- The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, operates tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must distinguish between shades of color.
