About department D471 Commissioned Ships Propulsion Plant:
D471 Commissioned Ships Propulsion Plant – Mechanical Engineering supports commissioned submarines and training units in the Navy. We provide technical support for LOS ANGELES, SEAWOLF, OHIO, and VIRGINIA Class submarines, and for Naval Nuclear Propulsion Training Sites. We provide the highest quality engineering services to support and enhance the operational availability and capability of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plants.
Steam Plant Fluids Engineering provides technical expertise and life cycle support for all non-nuclear fluid systems on the S6G Moored Training Ships (MTSs), including unique engineered safety feature (ESF) systems. Additionally, we provide technical support for steam plant fluid systems on OHIO, SEAWOLF, and VIRGINIA Class submarines, and the S8G Prototype.
Role overview:
This position requires resolution of a wide variety of technical challenges in a fast-paced environment. Technical expertise and knowledge of propulsion plant fluid systems, Military and Federal specifications, welding, fasteners, materials, mechanical equipment, and general methods of manufacturing will be developed by frequently using these skills in performing technical evaluations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage in system and/or component design, ship alteration upgrades, and life cycle support.
- Function as a project engineer overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks, ensuring overall technical quality.
- Work collaboratively in a team environment, maintaining schedules, being mindful of budgets, and collaborating with Design and other engineering organizations and disciplines.
- Evaluate and provide technical resolution to system and component related questions and problems from Naval Shipyards, Navy forces afloat, land-based prototypes, prime contractors and NAVSEA engineering and program offices.
- Effectively communicate within the organization and with NAVSEA, prime contractors, Navy shipyards and equipment vendors.

Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Aerospace, or equivalent)
- 5+ years of engineering experience post graduation
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in mechanical, marine, chemical, aerospace engineering, or equivalent.
- 5+ years of experience in US Navy
- Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program or commercial nuclear experience
- Experience with steam plant design, operations, or testing.
- Active DoD Secret clearance
