About This Position
Under supervision, to clean and care for an assigned building(s) or building area; to lock up and secure assigned building(s) or building area, and/or to perform as a member of a work projects crew.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This class is responsible for performing the full range of janitorial duties. Positions may be assigned either to a projects crew, a building or buildings, a designated area to clean, or may perform a combination of these duties.
This recruitment will also lead to establishing an eligibility list for future Regular Full-time, Extra Help, and Limited Term opportunities at the court.
Regular Full-Time – Individual is hired into a permanent position.
Extra Help - Positions are used by the Court to handle peak workload and vacancies. These positions are not eligible for most Court benefits - please review the benefits tab for more information.
Limited Term - Individual is hired for a specific term subject to an extension at the end of the term at the Court's discretion.
TYPICAL TASKS:
• Cleans, sweeps, and mops floors in all areas;
• Dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork, and metal work in all areas;
• Maintains restrooms in a clean and sanitary condition and replenishes supplies;
• Empties waste receptacles and ash trays and disposes of trash;
• Empties recycle receptacles and dispose in recycle bins;
• Moves and arranges furniture and office equipment;
• Operates dehumidifier to disinfect rooms;
• Cleans, disinfects, and polishes water fountains;
• Locks office doors and turns out the lights;
• Crushes glass receptacles;
• Sets up furniture and prepares rooms for special functions;
• Patrols designated areas making systematic inspections of buildings;
• Closes and locks buildings;
• Turns off lights;
• Observes and reports conditions which may indicate vandalism, illegal entry, or fire hazard;
• Prepares simple records, such as: time of rounds or a description of incidents.
• Strips, waxes, and buffs floors; operates and maintains heavy floor care equipment used in work;
• Vacuums carpets and draperies;
• Shampoos carpets;
• Replaces light bulbs or florescent tubes;
• Washes walls and inside windows;
• Disinfects public telephones;
• Minor Bio-hazardous clean-up and disposal;
• Performs other related duties as required.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Some assignments may require possession of a valid California driver's license. A minimum of one year of experience working in the field of industrial or office janitorial services is highly desirable. Submission to a background investigation upon offer of employment is required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
• Methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
ABILITY TO:
• Perform routine janitorial duties;
• Learn the approved methods of cleaning and caring for buildings and equipment; learn to operate heavy floor care machines after minimal instruction;
• Read and understand signs, labels, and work schedules written in English;
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
• Get along well with others;
• Lift and move heavy items and work in high places;
• Willingness to work on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and at night.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbents in this position may be assigned to work in a number of environments. These environments may include inside or outside a courthouse, inside or outside an office building; or at a warehouse with limited exposure to heat, cold, inclement weather dust, fumes, odors, and noise. Incumbents will be required to work the evening shift.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Have the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.; Communicate effectively with others.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 50 lbs., such as: files, stacks of paper, reference books, and other materials; frequent need to reach for items above and below desk level;
