Position Summary

Under the guidance of the Medical Director of Crisis Services and the Chief Medical Officer, the Virtual/Hybrid Psychiatrist provides system-wide psychiatric triage, consultation, and clinical decision support for both the 7 Mile Crisis Care Center and the 707 Crisis Center. This role is primarily virtual but includes periodic onsite presence based on program needs.

The psychiatrist supports Crisis Stabilization Units (CSU), Crisis Residential Units (CRU), Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC), and Mobile Crisis Teams by performing real-time case reviews, risk assessment, disposition recommendations, and tele-consults.

This position serves as a cross-site clinical resource, strengthening flow, improving access, and supporting onsite psychiatrists during periods of high volume or acuity.

Key Responsibilities

Virtual Triage & Consultation

• Conduct virtual psychiatric triage for individuals presenting at 7 Mile and 707 Crisis Care Centers. • Review nursing and therapist case presentations, clarify risk factors, and determine next steps in care. • Provide telepsychiatry consultations for CSU, CRU, BHUC, or Mobile Crisis referrals. • Support documentation review and disposition decisions in collaboration with onsite psychiatrists.

Cross-Site Clinical Support

• Serve as a shared psychiatric resource for both crisis centers, responding to cross-site needs based on volume and acuity. • Provide backup to onsite psychiatrists when inflow is high at BHUC or CSU units. • Offer virtual CRU coverage when clinically appropriate and in alignment with program guidelines.

Direct and Indirect Patient Care

• Provide virtual psychiatric evaluations, follow-ups, and medication decisions as applicable. • Coordinate with nursing, therapists, APPs, and peer specialists to maintain continuity of care. • Participate in pre-admission review consultations and help determine medical necessity.

Behavioral Health Urgent Care Support

• Provide psychiatric coverage for BHUC. • Assist with same-day consults, expedited decisions, and transitions of care.

Collaboration & System Integration

• Collaborate closely with onsite psychiatrists at both centers to ensure smooth workflow and shared clinical standards. • Participate in interdisciplinary case reviews, quality improvement activities, and clinical huddles. • Support education and training for residents, fellows, or students as assigned.

Administrative & Documentation Responsibilities

• Complete documentation in a timely and compliant manner. • Participate in meetings, clinical reviews, and operational discussions that support crisis program development. • Uphold DWIHN compliance standards, confidentiality requirements, and regulatory expectations.

Qualifications

Education

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), accredited program. • Completed residency in Psychiatry. • Board Certification in Psychiatry (ABPN). • Additional certification in Consult-Liaison Psychiatry or Child & Adolescent Psychiatry preferred.

Licensure

• Current Michigan medical license. • Michigan controlled substance license. • DEA registration. • Valid Michigan driver’s license (for occasional on-site needs).

Experience

• Minimum two (2) years of psychiatric experience in crisis, emergency psychiatry, inpatient, or community mental health settings. • Experience with telepsychiatry, crisis triage, or fast-paced behavioral healthcare strongly preferred. • Experience collaborating with nurses, therapists, mobile crisis teams, and APPs.

Skills

• Strong telehealth assessment and clinical decision-making abilities. • Knowledge of the Michigan Mental Health Code, MDHHS, DWIHN, and crisis care requirements. • Proficiency with electronic health records and virtual communication platforms. • Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously across two sites. • Excellent communication, interdisciplinary teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions

• Primarily remote/virtual with scheduled or as-needed onsite support at both the 7 Mile and 707 Crisis Care Centers. • May involve interaction with individuals experiencing acute behavioral health crises. • Flexible schedule required to support real-time triage needs.
