A. Job Function

The Lab Tech I plays a key role in executing daily laboratory operations by performing sample generation, sample preparation, basic assay procedures, and equipment maintenance in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Test Methods, and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). This entry-level position supports multiple functions across the laboratory, ensuring the timely and accurate completion of projects within a GLP and/or ISO17025-compliant environment.

Technicians are expected to escalate issues, follow established quality and safety practices, and contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized laboratory space.

B. Primary Responsibilities

Sample Generation and Preparation

1. Setup, calibration, and verification of smoking machines and other analytical equipment used in sample generation and preparation.

2. Generate and prepare samples following approved SOPs and Chain of Custody requirements.

3. Prepare and label solutions, media, reagents, and glassware for downstream use in assays.

4. Perform tasks such as transferring, diluting, digesting, sonication, evaporation, centrifugation, and filtration of samples.

5. Prepare impingers, flasks, autosampler vials, and associated materials for analysis.

6. Operate shakers, centrifuges, and other general-use laboratory equipment.

Toxicology Assays

1. Perform simple or routine steps in assays under direct supervision (e.g., colony counting, microplate reading, slide scoring).

2. Accurately record raw data, maintain laboratory logbooks, and complete necessary worksheets.

3. Prepare media and associated materials for use in Toxicology analysis.

Equipment and Facility Maintenance

1. Conduct and document equipment calibration, verification, and routine maintenance.

2. Participate in environmental monitoring, housekeeping, laboratory upkeep and receiving of materials.

3. Clean and maintain lab glassware and workstations.

Quality and Safety

1. Implement the Laboratory Quality Policy and perform their duties in accordance to existing project specific requirements, current Test Methods, study plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

2. Comply with Health & Safety policies and procedures and wear required Personal Protective Equipment at all times.

3. Ensure adherence to good documentation practices (GDP), GLP and ISO17025 requirements.

4. Report deviations, equipment malfunctions, and non-conformances to Team Leads or Supervisors promptly.

5. Participate in safety inspections, corrective actions, and training activities as required.

General Support

1. Follow assigned production schedules and timelines.

2. Work cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team.

3. Participate in team huddles and safety briefings.

4. Perform additional duties as assigned.

C. Education

1. Required: Diploma or Degree in a Biology-related discipline (e.g., Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, MLT).

2. Preferred: Training or experience in laboratory work, sample preparation, or mechanical/technical tasks.

3. Alternate: Equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by Human Resources and Department Director/Manager.

D. Experience

1. No prior lab experience required, but experience with mechanical equipment or lab instrumentation is an asset.

2. Familiarity with GLP or ISO17025 environments is preferred.

F. Additional Information

This position involves work in a laboratory setting that may include exposure to chemicals and biological materials in regulated environments. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs may be required.


2nd shift: Monday-Friday 2:45pm-10:45pm
