Location: Ottawa, ON (Head Office), hybrid
Reports to: Field Service Manager
Duration: Term
Salary Range: $17.60/hour

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Field Service Manager, the Assistant will support the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s asset-based community development (ABCD) initiative through the Canadian Centre for Nature-based Education. This work will contribute to building a national picture of Canada’s nature-based education landscape and identifying strengths, gaps, and opportunities across communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct community asset mapping by identifying programs, organizations, networks, and local strengths related to nature-based education and conservation.Perform environmental scans and data collection, including online research to identify where nature-based learning is currently happening.Assist with community profiling, gathering geographic, demographic, cultural, and sector-specific information for selected communities.Support stakeholder engagement by preparing outreach lists and participating in conversations or interviews with community members, educators, Indigenous partners, and youth-serving organizations (as appropriate).Explore and map how people, community groups or organizations, and programs connect, overlap, or complement each other to identify opportunities for collaboration or amplification. Synthesize findings into summaries, visuals, and insights that highlight strengths, gaps, emerging hubs, and opportunities for growth.Support project coordination, including maintaining project documents, organizing notes, tracking contacts, and contributing to internal planning discussions.Participate in team meetings and share insights that support the development of engagement plans and the broader ABCD approach.
Inform the development of a national GIS-based visualization showing who currently has access to nature-based education, where gaps exist, and where promising work could be scaled or amplified. Other tasks as assigned.

This role will provide hands-on experience in community engagement, research, and applied ABCD methods while contributing to CWF’s goal of strengthening the national ecosystem of nature-based education

Education, Experience, and Abilities

Pursuing post-secondary degree in Education, Communications, Environmental Science, Community Development or related field of studyStrong written and verbal communication skills Strong research, review and editing skills Experience with data managementIndependent self-starterHigh attention to detail OrganizedCritical thinking and problem solving Effective time management Proficient in standard business software (e.g., MS Office, Databases, etc.)Interest in environmental education French language an asset

Work Conditions

Full-time position, typically working Monday through Friday for 30 hours per week. Location: Head Office based in Ottawa, ON. Hybrid flexibility to work from home twice per week.Relatively constant sitting at a computer and use of peripherals.May experience mental stress due to interruptions or last-minute requests.

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, a youth employment program of the Government of Canada. All candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements. Candidates who do not meet all requirements will not be considered:

    Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment; and;Must have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial and territorial legislation and regulations.
