POSITION SUMMARYThe Modern and Classical Languages Department has an opening for a collaborative and dynamic Chinese teacher who enjoys working with students in 5th grade and will bring their joy for language and culture to the classroom. The 5th grade Chinese program is a component of our newly formed elementary school division.
Teachers in this department provide students with rich and meaningful learning experiences that inspire and challenge students to be curious, think deeply, explore creatively, act with empathy, and better the world. The ideal candidate will create a language classroom that values multiple perspectives and helps students build empathy toward diverse cultures and ways of thinking.

For candidates who are broadly interested in working with elementary school students, there may be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities at our Arbor Hills campus serving students in grades JK-5.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Teach one section of 5th grade Chinese meeting 3 afternoons per week at the Arbor Hills campus
- Demonstrate experience or interest in immersion teaching.
- Collaborate with department colleagues on pedagogy and curriculum, and to vertically align coursework to provide students with a meaningful scope and sequence throughout their 5-12 school experience.
- Reflect on instructional practices and seek out opportunities for professional development.
- Create inclusive and effective classroom environments and provide learning support for students inside and outside the classroom as needed, including implementing formal accommodations, in consultation with the Greenhills Learning Center.
- Practice clear, timely, and professional communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Attend department meetings.
- Promote an inclusive working and community environment.
- Serve as a role model in maintaining appropriate standards of care for students and maintaining healthy boundaries in student and professional relationships.
- Help with additional duties as assigned.
- Undergraduate degree in Chinese language studies or the equivalent required; graduate work and degree desired.
- Fluency in Chinese and English.
- Employs a variety of strategies, resources, and tools to teach in the immersion-based setting.
The ideal candidate will have substantial expertise in the field and will be:
- A student-centered educator who creates an interactive classroom.
- A creative problem solver.
- Knowledgeable about child development and the upper elementary child’s intellectual, social, and emotional development and willing to positively greet the challenges and opportunities they present.
- A professional oral and written communicator.
- Eager to work collaboratively with colleagues on curriculum design, pedagogy, and assessments.
- Comfortable using technology in the classroom.
- Work is conducted primarily in classrooms in the school.
- Physical agility to frequently lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, stand, walk and reach overhead.
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs.
- Work in person and outdoors.
- Greenhills School property is a tobacco-free environment.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the US.

Compensation: Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience and education level, and includes lunch when school is in session.
