Processing Laboratory Assistant in Soldotna, Alaska at Central Peninsula Hospital

POSITION SUMMARY: The Processing Laboratory Assistant receives all specimens into the Clinical Laboratory for testing, and processes specimens for reference laboratories. Responsibilities include: registering and receiving specimens, completing requisitions, labeling specimens, stabilizing specimens, checking specimen integrity, and packaging specimens for transportation according to DOT standards. This employee will be handling bio hazardous materials, and chemicals such as alcohol, xylene, liquid nitrogen and formalin and will be trained to safely handle specimens with these additives. Attention to detail is required for the proper labeling and specimen processing. Excels in an environment where multiple people must work as a team and have a strong focus on customer and patient satisfaction. Efficiently handles all duties and responds to emergent situations in a calm and professional manner using a positive approach and attitude. Provides backup support in the Outpatient Laboratory performing phlebotomy procedures, waived testing, specimen processing, and courier packet preparation, in addition to reception and clerical activities for the laboratory.

REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or GED
• One year of phlebotomy experience
• One year of clerical experience in a healthcare setting
• One year of specimen processing and packaging experience
• Proficiency with computers
• Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology.
• Strongly prefer National Phlebotomy certification.
