Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: An advanced practice practitioner is responsible for the evaluation and management of orthopedic patients in the inpatient, surgery and emergency department settings, treats and manages acute and chronic injury through the administering, dispensing and prescribing of therapeutic measures, tests, procedures and drugs, as defined in written practice guidelines and protocols signed and approved by the orthopedic department chair and/or the VP / Chief medical officer.

EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Required: Bachelors Degree and degree from acceptable Type A Physician Assistant Program recognized by the Board of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, or from a program otherwise designated for Physician Assistants which has been approved by the NC Board of Medical Examiners or the AMA. Must be registered with the NC Board of Medical Examiners as a Physician Assistant, or be eligible within two years of completing PA program. OR Registered Nurse who has successfully completed a graduate nursing education program, with board certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, or eligibility for board certification within two years of completing the NP program. Current and valid NC license to practice as a registered nurse, with NC Board of Nursing and NC Medical Board approval to use the title Nurse Practitioner. Both PA and NP: Must obtain and maintain a valid DEA number from the Drug Enforcement Agency. Must complete 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years approved by relevant credentialing bodies, of which 3 hours must be the study of medical and social effects of substance abuse, including abuse of prescription drugs, controlled substances and illicit drugs. BCLS certification and ACLS certification required.

Preferred:

Nurse Practitioners with MSN and valid FNP certificate upon hire, or Physician

Assistants with valid certification by the AMA as a PA, upon hire. Previous

experience as a NP or PA in an acute care or physician’s practice setting and ACLS

certified upon hire.

ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Incumbent must demonstrate the ability to understand, communicate and react effectively and appropriately to the unique needs the population served. Incumbent must demonstrate clinical competence per the job’s Skills Checklist before being allowed to perform independently.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Supervises: Provides oversight and guidance to nurses and non-licensed patient care support personnel with regard to organization of care and care rendered. Provides input with respect to clinical/technical competence, but has no responsibility for personnel actions and decisions.

Reports To: VP / Chief Medical Officer for carrying out prescribed and delegated medical regimen.
