About the role

The Quality Control (QC) Inspector is responsible for performing inspection activities to verify conformance of materials, components, and processes to applicable codes, standards, procurement documents, and internal quality requirements. This role serves as a key function in ensuring dimensional accuracy, material traceability, and compliance with applicable regulatory and quality program requirements, including ASME and NQA-1.

The QC Inspector operates within defined procedures and documented instructions and supports production, engineering, and quality assurance functions to prevent nonconforming conditions and ensure product integrity.

What you'll do

The QC Inspector performs inspection and test activities on safety-related, non-safety related with special treatment, and other designated items in accordance with approved procedures and instructions.

Activities include, but are not limited to:

Inspection and verification of mechanical components, fabrication, and assembliesReview of inspection/test documentation and acceptance recordsVerification of compliance with drawings, specifications, and code requirementsParticipation in quality system activities including audits, corrective actions, and process improvements

General Inspection Duties

Perform inspections and tests in accordance with approved procedures, drawings, and acceptance criteriaDocument inspection and test results clearly and accuratelyIdentify, document, and report nonconforming conditionsWitness and verify work activities when required by governing documentsMaintain complete and traceable quality recordsSupport process reporting and continuous improvement initiatives

Consistent with qualification expectations, inspectors must be capable of performing and documenting inspections in accordance with procedures and standards.

Incoming Material Inspection & Traceability

Review Certified Material Test Reports (CMTRs/MTRs) for compliance with procurement and code requirementsVerify heat/lot traceability to drawings and purchase ordersPerform receiving inspections and document acceptance statusSegregate and control nonconforming materialsDevelop and maintain inspection plans and travelers

Dimensional and Visual Inspection

Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measurement tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges, gauges, CMM systems)Verify conformance to dimensional tolerances and GD&T requirementsGenerate inspection reports, including First Article Inspection (FAI) documentationConduct visual inspections for workmanship, fit-up, and weld conformance

Welding and Fabrication Quality Support

Verify welding documentation including WPS, PQR, and welder qualificationsConfirm traceability of welds and associated materialsSupport or witness qualification activities as requiredVerify compliance with applicable welding codes and standards

Audits, Nonconformance, and Corrective Action

Participate in internal and supplier auditsSupport or lead Nonconformance Reports (NCR) and Corrective/Preventive Actions (CAPA)Perform root cause analysis and verification of corrective actionsSupport Material Review Board (MRB) activities

Metrology and Calibration

Verify calibration status of inspection and test equipment prior to useMaintain control of gauges, fixtures, and measurement systemsCoordinate calibration activities with external providersSupport measurement system analysis (e.g., gage R&R)

Documentation and Records

Maintain accurate, legible, and complete inspection/test recordsEnsure records meet quality program requirements for traceability and retentionSupport documentation required for certification and qualification recordsQualifications

Education and Experience

Minimum qualifications shall be consistent with applicable inspection personnel requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent (minimum baseline requirement)Relevant inspection or testing experience in applicable disciplines

Typical experience levels:

Level I: Entry-level with basic training and supervised experienceLevel II: Demonstrated capability in inspection planning, execution, and evaluationLevel III (if applicable): Advanced capability including evaluation of procedures and personnel

These levels align with defined capability expectations for inspection personnel.

Technical Competencies

Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and proceduresWorking knowledge of dimensional metrology and inspection techniquesUnderstanding of material traceability and documentation requirementsFamiliarity with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, NQA-1)Ability to evaluate inspection results and determine acceptability

Certification and Qualification

Personnel shall be trained, qualified, and certified in accordance with applicable quality proceduresCertification is based on education, experience, training, and demonstrated capabilityCertification validity period and recertification requirements shall comply with program procedures

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform inspection activities including visual acuity and color differentiationCapability to stand, walk, and perform shop-floor inspections for extended periodsAbility to handle and measure components safely

Annual vision examinations and physical capability requirements shall be met for certification.

Authorities and Interfaces

The QC Inspector:

Has authority to identify, segregate and document nonconforming conditionsInterfaces with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality AssuranceSupports certification, audit, and compliance activitiesOperates under the direction of Quality Control and Quality Assurance leadership

Key Performance Expectations

Accuracy and completeness of inspection recordsEffectiveness in identifying and preventing nonconformancesAdherence to procedures and quality program requirements
