Basic Functions and Scope of Responsibility
YMCA Tutors provide academic support, encouragement, and mentorship to students participating in YMCA youth programs. This role focuses on strengthening academic skills, building confidence, and creating a positive learning environment aligned with YMCA values. Tutors work with students individually or in small groups to assist with homework, reinforce classroom learning, and support their overall educational success.
Role Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in core academic subjects such as math, reading, writing, and science
- Assist students with homework completion and study skills development
- Adapt instructional methods to meet individual learning styles and academic needs
- Foster a positive, encouraging environment that supports student confidence and motivation
- Collaborate with YMCA staff and, when appropriate, families to ensure academic goals are supported
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and attendance
- Ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment
- Attend required YMCA trainings and staff meetings
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support youth development programs
Education, Experience & Training
- High school diploma and a 2 year degree required
- Demonstrated proficiency in core academic subjects
- Prior tutoring, teaching, or mentoring experience required, with a current teaching license or instructional assistant certificate preferred
- Strong communication skills and ability to connect with students of various ages and backgrounds
- Patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in helping students learn and grow
- CPR, AED and First Aid certification obtained within 30 days of employment

Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
- Must havehighlevel of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
