Job Description

Job Summary

Working as part of Family Development and Food Security Teamand reporting directly to the Executive Chef, the Shelter Cook providesnutritional services to the VNFC Shelter and programs as required. Thisposition will work evenings and weekends to support the kitchen operations ofthe VNFC Shelter, which provides temporary shelter for unhoused community.

Roles and Responsibilities

As the VNFC Shelter Cook, job duties include thefollowing:

• Ensurestandards of safe kitchen procedures and rules are posted and adhered to viatraining sessions for other program staff/participants who may be working or assistingin the kitchen

• Ensurekitchen cleanliness and/or sanitation are completed and maintained daily

• Theheating and portioning of shelter meals

• Prepingredients as needed

• Maintaincleanliness daily

• Goingto pick up supplies when needed

• Laundercloths and aprons weekly

• Enforcea Food Safety Plan

• Meetweekly with the Executive Chef for planning, preparing and supervising thepreparation of meals/snacks for the Shelter

As a member of the VNFC Team, job duties include the following:

• Documentand report activity in alignment with VNFC practices and support internal andexternal reporting as required including daily guest numbers and accuraterecords

• Attendrelevant professional training and meetings when directed

• Participatein staff development, staff meetings and department meetings as required

• Workboth independently, and as part of a team and follow instructions

Knowledge and Skills

Familiarity and experience in Indigenous Communities

• Someknowledge of Indigenous cultures and practices including from the territory inwhich the work of VNFC takes place. Ability to speak about one’s own Indigenous culture, if applicable, andany communities the (prospective) employee has previously lived in or held jobswithin.

• Indepth knowledge of the experience of Indigenous peoples in Canada including theongoing processes of colonization, discrimination, and structural violence, andthe effects on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous communities.

• Knowledgeand practice of providing community-based services to Indigenous peoples usingphilosophies of cultural humility and cultural safety.

Communication Skills and Abilities

• Excellentinterpersonal communication skills including written and oral communication

• Abilityto effectively present information and respond to questions from clients andthe general public

Leadership Skills and Abilities

• Abilityto work independently and be part of an integrated community team

• Abilityto multi-task while remaining composed and maintaining a professional attitudein high stress situations

• Abilityto be flexible and adapt to an ever-changing environment

Other

• Physicalrequirement: ability to spend a major portion of the work hours standing,walking, and/or lifting heavy objects. The role may require doing a great dealof stretching, bending and lifting (such as but not limited to kitchenequipment, food and/or dishes).

This position requires evening and weekend and sometimes irregular shifts.Qualifications

Education

• FOODSAFEcertification, FOODSAFE Level 2 Certification preferred

• Recognizedcourse(s) in cultural safety and humility or equivalent life and/orprofessional experience

Work Experience

• Previousexperience working in the food industry, managing kitchens; receiving anddistribution of food

• Relevantexperience working within Indigenous communities and/or non-profitorganizations

• Previousexperience working within Indigenous community with health issues relating tonutrition and healthy family practices regarding the attaining and cooking offoods

Licenses and/or Certificates

• Clearvulnerable sector criminal record check within past six months.
