Job Description
The Airport Terminal Security Officer is responsible for helping maintain a safe, secure, and orderly environment for passengers, visitors, employees, airport personnel, and other authorized individuals at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).
Security Officers perform security and access-control functions in accordance with applicable Transportation Security Administration (TSA), airport, federal, state, and local regulations, as well as East Coast Protective Services policies, procedures, post orders, and customer requirements.
The Security Officer is expected to maintain a professional presence, provide excellent customer service, promptly identify and respond to security and safety concerns, and accurately document incidents and operational activities.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Airport Security Officer may be assigned to various locations and posts throughout the airport. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Access Control: Control access to restricted, secured, and authorized areas of the airport, permitting entry only to properly authorized individuals.
- Credential Verification: Verify identification, badges, credentials, permits, and other required documentation for individuals accessing restricted areas.
- Personnel and Vehicle Screening: Screen and log personnel and/or vehicles entering secured or restricted airport areas in accordance with airport and customer procedures.
- Vehicle Inspections: Conduct required vehicle inspections at designated airport access points and report unauthorized or suspicious activity.
- Exit Lane Security: Monitor and secure exit lanes leading from sterile or secured areas into public areas of the terminal.
- Terminal Patrol: Conduct foot patrols throughout assigned terminal areas and maintain a visible security presence.
- Parking Facility Patrol: Patrol parking garages and designated airport parking areas to identify and report suspicious activity, safety hazards, security concerns, or unauthorized activity.
- Security Response: Respond promptly and appropriately to security breaches, alarms, disturbances, suspicious activity, safety concerns, and other incidents.
- Emergency Response: Assist with emergency situations in accordance with established airport emergency procedures, post orders, and company policies.
- Passenger Assistance: Provide professional assistance and directions to passengers, visitors, and airport personnel while maintaining security responsibilities.
- Incident Reporting: Prepare accurate and detailed Incident/Occurrence Reports for events involving security, safety, customer complaints or concerns, operational issues, accidents, unusual activity, or other reportable incidents.
- Communication: Immediately report safety concerns, security breaches, suspicious activity, unusual circumstances, and operational issues to the appropriate supervisor and/or airport authority.
- Policy Compliance: Follow all applicable TSA requirements, airport regulations, customer specifications, company policies, post orders, and operating procedures.
- Professional Conduct: Maintain a professional appearance, demeanor, and customer-service-oriented attitude while representing East Coast Protective Services and the airport.
- Security Awareness: Maintain a high level of situational awareness and remain alert to potential security threats, safety hazards, unattended items, suspicious behavior, and unauthorized activity.
- Training: Fully participate in required security, safety, customer service, emergency response, and industry-specific training programs.
- Career Development: Maintain required knowledge, certifications, licenses, and training necessary to perform assigned security duties and support opportunities for advancement.
- Licensing Requirements: Obtain and maintain all applicable state, county, municipal, airport, and other required licenses, permits, certifications, and clearances necessary to perform aviation security duties.
- Airport Procedures: Become familiar with and consistently follow the airport-specific Operations Performance Manual, post orders, security procedures, emergency procedures, and other applicable operational documentation.
- Teamwork: Work cooperatively with fellow Security Officers, supervisors, airport personnel, airline employees, law enforcement, TSA, emergency responders, and other authorized agencies.
Security Officers are expected to proactively identify and report conditions that may compromise airport safety or security. Officers must:
- Remain alert and attentive while on duty.
- Immediately report security vulnerabilities, suspicious activity, safety hazards, and policy violations.
- Follow established procedures when responding to security incidents and emergencies.
- Protect restricted and secured areas from unauthorized access.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding security procedures, airport operations, and sensitive information.
- Never abandon an assigned post without authorization or appropriate relief.
- Follow all applicable airport security and safety requirements.
- Properly use required security equipment and personal protective equipment.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of incidents and assigned duties.
Because Security Officers are highly visible representatives of both the airport and East Coast Protective Services, employees are expected to:
- Treat passengers, visitors, employees, and airport personnel with professionalism and respect.
- Provide clear and courteous assistance when requested.
- Remain calm and professional during difficult or stressful situations.
- Exercise sound judgment when addressing customer concerns.
- Escalate complaints, disputes, and security-related matters to a supervisor when appropriate.
- Balance excellent customer service with the responsibility to maintain airport security.
- Must meet all applicable requirements for employment as an Aviation Security Officer.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain required airport security credentials and clearances.
- Must satisfy all applicable state, county, municipal, airport, and company licensing requirements.
- Must successfully complete required background screening and airport security vetting.
- Must successfully complete all required company, airport, TSA, and customer-specific training.
- Must be able to read, understand, and follow written procedures, post orders, and instructions.
- Must demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to accurately complete incident and occurrence reports.
- Must demonstrate sound judgment, reliability, professionalism, and attention to detail.
- Previous security, law enforcement, military, customer service, or airport experience is preferred but may not be required depending on the assigned position.
The position may require the ability to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Conduct frequent foot patrols throughout terminal, parking, and secured areas.
- Climb stairs and navigate airport facilities as required.
- Remain alert and attentive for extended periods.
- Respond quickly to emergencies and security incidents.
- Work indoors and outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
- Work nights, weekends, holidays, and varying shifts based on airport operational requirements.
- Wear the required company and airport-approved uniform and equipment.
- Perform other reasonable security-related duties as assigned.
Airport Security Officers work in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment where security, safety, professionalism, and customer service are critical. Officers may interact with passengers, airport employees, airline personnel, contractors, vendors, TSA personnel, law enforcement, emergency responders, and airport management.
Employees must understand that airport security operations are subject to changing conditions and may require flexibility, sound judgment, and immediate response to security or operational situations.
