The Opportunity
As Product Manager for our Commercial Multi-Peril (CMP) product line, with a current focus on BusinessOwners Policy (BOP), you will own the BOP P&L, lead the system build for the BOP platform, lead the management of an early-stage and actively growing book of business, and contribute to the development of future commercial products. This role is central to building out the CMP portfolio. Profitable growth at pace is a central mission of the role.
This is a highly visible senior individual contributor role. You will work across Underwriting, Technology, Actuarial, Claims, Distribution, Operations, Compliance, and Executive Leadership. The successful candidate will combine the mindset of a business owner, the judgment of an underwriter, the discipline of a portfolio manager, and the execution focus of a product owner.
Key Responsibilities & Areas of Ownership
Product P&L & Business Performance
Ownership of the CMP / BOP P&L, with current emphasis on the BOP product line. You are accountable for profitability, growth, and portfolio health — partnering with Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims, Finance, and Distribution to achieve those outcomes.
- Manage key performance metrics including premium growth, new business production, retention, loss ratio, combined ratio, and portfolio mix.
- Drive profitable premium growth from an early-stage base; develop and execute a scaled growth plan in partnership with Distribution and Underwriting leadership.
- Identify and recommend strategic adjustments to pricing, eligibility, underwriting appetite, coverage design, and operational processes.
- Develop business cases supporting product enhancements, technology investments, and growth initiatives.
- Partner with leadership to establish performance objectives and long-term product strategy.
- Monitor market conditions, competitor activity, customer needs, and emerging risks to inform strategic decision-making.
Portfolio Management & Steering
Actively manage the CMP portfolio – with primary focus on BOP – as a dynamic business, not a static product.
- Monitor portfolio performance across class, geography, distribution source, industry segment, and risk characteristics.
- Identify emerging trends, concentration risks, profitability opportunities, and growth segments.
- Partner with Portfolio Analytics, Actuarial, and Underwriting leadership to evaluate portfolio performance and implement corrective actions.
- Prepare and present portfolio performance insights, recommendations, and forward-looking analyses to senior leadership.
- Establish and maintain product performance dashboards and KPIs that provide meaningful visibility into business results and portfolio health.
Product Strategy & Market Leadership
Establish and execute the strategic roadmap for the CMP product line, with near-tern focus on BOP.
- Develop and maintain a multi-year product strategy aligned with organizational objectives.
- Monitor competitor activity, industry trends, emerging risks, customer expectations, and regulatory developments.
- Evaluate opportunities for product enhancement, modernization, and innovation.
- Translate market intelligence into actionable product decisions involving coverage design, pricing, underwriting rules, endorsements, and eligibility criteria.
- Ensure the product remains relevant, competitive, and profitable in evolving market conditions.
BOP Platform Build & Product Ownership
Serve as the business Product Owner for the CMP/BOP platform implementation and future enhancements, partnering with Technology, Operations, Underwriting, and external vendors to ensure successful delivery.
- Lead business requirements development and product configuration decisions.
- Translate business objectives into functional requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, workflows, and implementation priorities.
- Partner with Technology, Business Analysts, Operations, Vendors, and Project teams throughout implementation.
- Participate in backlog prioritization, sprint planning, testing, issue resolution, and release readiness activities.
- Ensure rating logic, underwriting rules, forms, endorsements, workflows, and regulatory requirements are accurately reflected within the platform.
- Drive clarity and decision-making when ambiguity exists, balancing business needs against implementation constraints.
Commercial Product Expansion
As our commercial business evolves, contribute to and help shape future product offerings.
- Lead, support, and contribute to the development of additional commercial insurance products beyond BOP.
- Identify opportunities for adjacent products, product enhancements, and portfolio diversification.
- Support product development efforts from concept through launch and ongoing management.
- Contribute to market expansion opportunities and new product initiatives aligned with organizational growth objectives.
Underwriting Partnership, Authority & Referrals
Work closely with Underwriting leadership to ensure alignment between product strategy and risk selection. This role carries defined underwriting authority, sitting between underwriters and Department Heads in the referral and decision-making hierarchy. You will serve as the first escalation point for complex, non-conforming, or out-of-appetite risks referred by underwriters, exercising sound judgment and providing clear, documented decisions within your authority threshold.
- Accept and adjudicate underwriting referrals from the field underwriting team; provide timely, well-reasoned decisions on risks that exceed underwriter authority or fall outside standard appetite guidelines.
- Escalate referrals requiring Department Head authority with a clear recommendation and supporting rationale, ensuring decisions are informed and efficient.
- Serve as a resource for complex product and coverage questions.
- Support underwriting referral discussions and portfolio management decisions.
- Maintain consistency between referral decisions and established product guidelines, underwriting appetite, and profitability objectives — and flag patterns that signal a need for guideline revision.
- Provide expertise on underwriting guidelines, authority structures, eligibility rules, and appetite management across the CMP product line.
- Collaborate with Underwriting leadership on best practices, authority governance, training, ongoing guideline development and governance standards.
- Help ensure underwriting decisions at all levels remain aligned with profitability objectives and strategic goals.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Success in this role requires genuine collaboration and the ability to influence without authority.
- Build strong partnerships across Underwriting, Technology, Actuarial, Claims, Operations, Compliance, Finance, Distribution, and Marketing.
- Facilitate alignment among stakeholders with competing priorities and perspectives.
- Support go-to-market activities, product launches, distribution initiatives, and organizational change efforts.
- Engage with agents, brokers, and distribution partners to understand market needs and improve ease of doing business.
The right candidate is highly collaborative and approachable while also capable of challenging assumptions, driving decisions, and creating alignment when it doesn’t exist organically.
Regulatory & Governance
- Ensure product compliance with applicable state and federal regulatory requirements.
- Support rate, rule, and form filing activities in partnership with Compliance and Legal.
- Monitor regulatory developments and recommend product or process adjustments as needed.
- Maintain disciplined product governance practices, documentation standards, and decision frameworks.
Who Thrives Here
You will be successful in this role if you:
- Enjoy solving complex business problems with incomplete information.
- Are equally comfortable discussing underwriting appetite, portfolio performance, and system requirements.
- Build strong relationships across functions and influence without formal authority.
- Balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution.
- Have a bias toward action and continuous improvement.
- Enjoy building new capabilities rather than maintaining the status quo.
- Take ownership of outcomes while helping others succeed.
