Position Title: Adjunct Faculty - Introduction to the Writing Process (On-Campus)
Department: College of Arts & Letters – Department of English
Reports To: Chair, Department of English
Appointment: Part-Time, Adjunct Faculty
Location: Bluefield University, Bluefield, VA

Position Summary

Bluefield University invites applications for an on-campus Adjunct Faculty member to teach Introduction to the Writing Process, a foundational first-year writing course designed to prepare students for academic success across the curriculum. This position requires face-to-face instruction on the Bluefield University campus and is intended to support first-year students in developing college-level writing, reading, critical thinking, and communication skills.

The successful candidate will be passionate about teaching undergraduate students, committed to student success, and able to create an engaging classroom environment that supports the University's Christ-centered mission.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Teach one or more on-campus, face-to-face sections of Introduction to the Writing Process.
  • Prepare engaging lessons that promote effective academic writing, revision, research, and critical thinking.
  • Create a welcoming classroom environment that encourages participation, collaboration, and student success.
  • Assess student learning through essays, projects, assignments, presentations, and examinations.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback on student work.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and grade records and submit grades by established deadlines.
  • Maintain appropriate availability for students outside of class consistent with adjunct faculty expectations.
  • Utilize the University's learning management system for course communication, instructional materials, and grading.
  • Adhere to University academic policies, curriculum requirements, and assessment expectations.
  • Participate in adjunct orientation and other professional development activities as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in English, Composition, Rhetoric, Writing Studies, Education (with significant writing instruction experience), or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach college-level writing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to teach in person on the Bluefield University campus.
  • Commitment to student success and academic excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience teaching first-year composition or developmental writing at the collegiate level.
  • Experience teaching diverse student populations.
  • Familiarity with Canvas or another learning management system.
  • Experience integrating AI and digital writing tools into instruction in an academically responsible manner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage first-year students through active learning strategies.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to provide meaningful feedback that strengthens student writing.
  • Commitment to collaboration with faculty and academic support staff.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to teach in a traditional, on-campus classroom environment.
  • Ability to use standard instructional technology, computers, and classroom presentation equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students individually and in group settings.
