Job Description
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform supervisory and participatory recreation work directing a small staff, administering, and leading recreation programs for the public, and providing services and facilities for organized groups at a small recreation center. The work responsibilities are: supervises employees and volunteers; oversees the administration of recreation programs; manages the community center’s financial resources; and contributes to the department objectives by performing additional duties involving community center promotion, facility maintenance, and facility safety and security assessments. Employees in this class typically supervise small staffs of Recreation Leader Is, Recreation Aides, and volunteers in activities and programs. The Community Center Director II is distinguished from Director III in that the Community Center Director II is more involved in leading programs (50% of time or more), is generally assigned to a smaller facility, and is generally in charge of a smaller staff (average three subordinates). The Director III is generally in charge of a larger facility with a larger staff (average seven subordinates) with open gym activities and/or athletic programs and activities. The Community Center Director IIs report to the Recreation Area Supervisor.
Bachelor's degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER), Recreation Administration, or a closely related field and one (1) year of professional supervisory experience in the administration of recreation and/or athletic programs in a parks and recreation department, school, or similar agency.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s license and an insurable driving record. May be required to work nights, weekends, and overtime for special events and emergencies.
