Job Description

Sr. Software Engineer - RTOS & Networking

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Software Engineer - RTOS & Networking based in the United States.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will help design and advance software for high-assurance, mission-critical embedded systems.
You will focus on RTOS and networking capabilities within a modular software platform supporting demanding edge-computing environments.
The role offers the opportunity to architect and implement networking protocols while ensuring deterministic, hard real-time performance and reliability.
You will work across hypervisor, operating-system, networking, and application layers to analyze performance and solve complex low-level challenges.
Your work will contribute to secure, scalable, and certifiable systems used across aerospace, defense, automotive, medical, and industrial applications.
You will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams while contributing to certification activities and production-quality software.
This is a hands-on opportunity for an experienced embedded engineer who enjoys solving technically challenging problems at the intersection of networking, RTOS, and mission-critical computing.

Accountabilities:
  • Architect, design, implement, test, and document embedded networking software and services, including IPv4, IPv6, TCP, UDP, IPsec, and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).
  • Develop and maintain software for embedded systems with a strong focus on hard real-time performance, reliability, efficiency, scalability, and stability.
  • Analyze and optimize hypervisor, RTOS, and network performance to identify bottlenecks and improve system behavior.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate networking protocols, application stacks, and other platform technologies effectively.
  • Troubleshoot complex low-level software and networking issues, determining whether problems originate in hardware, software, or system integration.
  • Develop application-level solutions using POSIX and ARINC 653 programming models.
  • Contribute to RTOS, virtualization, hypervisor, and related tooling initiatives as required.
  • Support the generation, review, and maintenance of software certification data for high-assurance systems.
  • Use performance-analysis and packet-capture tools such as perf, ftrace, tcpdump, and Wireshark to diagnose and optimize system behavior.
  • Contribute to Agile development processes, including source control, code review, continuous integration, and automated testing workflows.
  • Perform additional engineering responsibilities as needed while managing multiple technical priorities effectively.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong C programming skills, including experience with common APIs and programming models such as POSIX and ARINC 653.
  • Hands-on experience with networking protocols including TCP, UDP, IPv4, IPv6, IPsec, and/or TSN.
  • Professional experience with at least one RTOS, such as LynxOS-178, VxWorks, QNX, or FreeRTOS, or experience with Linux kernel-space development.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex software, networking, and kernel-level problems.
  • Experience using performance-analysis and network-diagnostic tools, including perf, ftrace, tcpdump, and Wireshark.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and development tools such as Jira, Confluence, Git, and Gerrit.
  • Understanding of CI/CD workflows and tools such as Jenkins or Azure DevOps.
  • Scripting and automation experience using Python, Bash, or comparable languages.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot, Codex, or Claude Code to produce production-quality software.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a technically demanding environment.
  • US citizenship is required.

Nice to have:

  • Experience developing Linux device drivers and bootloaders.
  • Assembly programming experience on x86 or ARM architectures.
  • Familiarity with DO-178C software lifecycle and certification standards.
  • Contributions to open-source software projects or communities.
  • Hands-on root-cause analysis and kernel-level debugging experience.
  • Knowledge of RTOS, hypervisors, and virtualization technologies such as VMware, KVM, Xen, or QEMU.
  • Understanding of concurrency and multicore SMP/AMP architectures.
Benefits:
  • Low-cost medical, dental, and vision coverage options.
  • 401(k) plan with a generous employer match.
  • Responsible paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Remote work opportunities based on role and business requirements.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Career growth and professional development opportunities.
  • Opportunity to work on technically challenging, mission-critical embedded systems across demanding industries.
