We are a growing multi-disciplined firm of professional engineers, architects, environmental scientists, geologists, planners and landscape architects headquartered in Syracuse, NY, with branch offices throughout New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut and Maine. B&L specializes in transportation engineering, water supply, wastewater management, solid waste management, land planning and site design, environmental services, facilities engineering, land surveying and asset management. We are currently seeking a Community Planner for a full-time position in our Buffalo, NY office. This position will be located within our Sustainable Planning & Design practice area.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in writing a variety of planning documents, publications, forms, reports, memoranda, and grant applications

  • Analyze and interpret US Census, tax assessment, and other publicly available community data

  • Prepare maps and graphics

  • Develop stakeholder and public engagement tools, such as slide decks, discussion questions, surveys, poster boards, flyers, and press releases

  • Prepare for, attend, and support public, stakeholder, and committee meetings; document, summarize, and interpret input received

  • Provide assistance with municipal approval/adoption proceedings, such as the drafting of SEQRA environmental assessment forms and resolutions

  • Prepare recommendations for municipal policies, programs, and projects that advance a community’s long-term development vision; identify appropriate partnerships and funding mechanisms for these recommendations

  • Stay informed of new techniques and emerging trends in the professional planning practice and offer thought leadership on best planning practices

  • Maintain active involvement in industry organizations, including conference presentations and leadership-level participation

  • Monitor project progress to ensure alignment with the contract scope of work, identify risks, and proactively address issues

  • Guide the development and/or design of projects to meet internal and client expectations

  • Professionally represent the firm with clients, government officials, and the public



Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Community, Urban, or Regional Planning, or a related field

  • Proficient writing and communication skills and ability to collaborate and interact effectively with staff, clients, and members of the public

  • Experience with a variety of computer software, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and ArcGIS Pro

  • Willingness to travel for meetings/events, generally within a 200-mile radius

  • Willingness to attend meetings/events during the evening (generally 2-4 times/month) and on the weekend (generally 2-3 times/year)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-5 years of prior consulting work experience

  • AICP-certified, or on track to earn AICP certification

  • Familiarity with laws and regulations around local governance in New York State (e.g. zoning, open meetings, SEQRA)

  • Familiarity with climate action planning, such as greenhouse gas emissions inventories, vulnerability assessments, mitigation/adaptation strategies, and resiliency principles

  • Familiarity with parks and open space master planning, trail planning and design, and linear transportation planning projects.

  • Experience developing virtual public engagement tools, such as websites, interactive maps, and online surveys

  • Urban planning and design skills, such as site, neighborhood, corridor, and park master planning; experience with AutoCAD and Adobe Photoshop would be a plus

Estimated Pay Range: $60,000 - $72,000/year.

Actual compensation may vary based on related work experience, geographical location and market conditions, education/training, certifications, and other credentials, as well as applicable knowledge and skills.
