Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Database Administrator (DBA) based in United Kingdom.
In this senior technical role, you will be the primary guardian of mission-critical database systems powering a fast-scaling fintech platform. You will ensure the reliability, performance, and security of high-throughput PostgreSQL environments that underpin core financial services. This is a hands-on engineering position where deep database expertise meets architectural ownership, requiring both strategic thinking and operational excellence. You will design scalable and resilient data infrastructure while actively optimizing performance and ensuring zero-compromise availability standards. Working closely with engineering and product teams, you will influence data architecture decisions that directly impact customer experience and system stability. The environment is highly technical, cloud-native, and automation-driven, with a strong emphasis on reliability engineering and continuous improvement. This role is ideal for a seasoned DBA who thrives in complex, high-availability systems and wants to shape the backbone of modern financial technology.
- Own and ensure end-to-end reliability of PostgreSQL database systems, including high availability, disaster recovery, and adherence to strict RPO/RTO targets.
- Design and implement scalable database architectures, including partitioning, sharding strategies, and capacity planning for high-growth environments.
- Optimize database performance through deep query analysis, indexing strategies, and continuous bottleneck identification and resolution.
- Build and maintain robust infrastructure for backups, replication, connection pooling, and database automation processes.
- Define and implement observability frameworks, including monitoring, alerting, SLIs/SLOs, and performance dashboards using modern tooling.
- Ensure banking-grade security practices, including access control, credential management, and compliance-aligned data handling.
- Collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to support schema design and ensure database architecture aligns with application needs.
- Drive automation initiatives using Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD practices to improve efficiency and operational consistency.
- Lead technical standards for database engineering, mentoring peers and promoting best practices across teams.
- Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to long-term data platform strategy.
- 5+ years of experience as a PostgreSQL DBA in high-load, production-grade environments, ideally within fintech or mission-critical systems.
- Deep expertise in PostgreSQL internals, including MVCC, WAL, vacuum processes, indexing strategies, and query optimization.
- Strong experience with high availability and disaster recovery solutions such as replication, clustering, and backup validation.
- Hands-on experience with cloud environments, particularly GCP, and strong Linux system administration skills.
- Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible, along with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab, ArgoCD).
- Strong SQL expertise, including complex queries, stored procedures, and performance tuning.
- Experience building observability and monitoring systems for databases using tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
- Strong understanding of security best practices, including secrets management and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, PCI DSS).
- Ability to work autonomously, take full ownership of database infrastructure, and operate in fast-paced environments.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Fluent English required.
- Competitive compensation package with long-term equity (stock options).
- Flexible remote or hybrid work across Europe.
- Strong focus on professional growth, learning, and career development.
- Opportunity to work on large-scale, mission-critical fintech infrastructure.
- Modern cloud-native technology stack (GCP, Kubernetes, Kafka, PostgreSQL, and more).
- High level of ownership and autonomy over database architecture and reliability.
- Inclusive, supportive, and people-focused company culture.
- Unique Work & Swim program offering a one-month stay in Cyprus with full remote work support.
