Position: Mechanical Engineer

Reports to: Chief Engineer

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Mechanical Engineer Summary: The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and continuous improvement of packaging and converting machinery, mechanical systems, and related equipment. This role applies mechanical engineering expertise to develop reliable, cost-effective solutions that meet customer, performance, quality, and manufacturing requirements. The Mechanical Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to support new product development, product improvements, and customer needs while ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards. Additionally, this position serves as a technical resource and mentor to Mechanical Designers and Mechanical Co-ops.

Mechanical Engineer Essential Functions:

  • Design, develop, and improve packaging and converting machinery, mechanical systems, and related equipment.
  • Perform engineering analysis, calculations, and evaluations to support safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs.
  • Develop and maintain engineering drawings, bills of materials, product standards, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards, regulations, and engineering best practices.
  • Implement product improvement initiatives and support new product development activities.
  • Evaluate, select, and collaborate with vendors regarding mechanical systems, components, and design solutions.
  • Research and remain current on industry developments, emerging technologies, and competitive products.
  • Maintain records supporting engineering activities, including documentation required for patent actions and intellectual property protection.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, presentations, and other engineering communications as required.
  • Provide engineering support and technical expertise to Manufacturing, Technical Service, Sales, and other departments.
  • Work effectively with customers, suppliers, Electrical Engineering, and other cross-functional teams to support project and business objectives.
  • Support Technical Service activities, including customer site visits and travel as required.
  • Mentor Mechanical Designers and Mechanical Co-ops to support technical growth and professional development.
  • Utilize the CMD integrated business system and engineering processes effectively.
  • Contribute to CMD's core competencies of Market Intelligence and Product Development by gathering and sharing relevant market, competitive, and technology information.
  • Support lean manufacturing, continuous improvement initiatives, and process improvement activities throughout the organization.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, maintain a clean and organized work area, and promote a safe working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in the engineer-to-order machinery industry, such as converting, printing, plastics, or packaging machinery manufacturing.
  • Experience in machinery and mechanical system design.
  • Ability to perform engineering design calculations and technical analysis.
  • Working knowledge of electrical components and control systems.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and SolidWorks 3D Modeling.

Additional Details and Requirements:

  • May require work in excess of a 40-hour workweek to effectively carry out job responsibilities.
  • Occasional travel required.

Work Environment: CMD is located in Appleton, WI. Our three facilities operate by secure entry, are well lit, air temperature controlled for comfort, and clean with low noise. Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, reach, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and other routine office and manufacturing equipment.
  • The position requires sufficient physical mobility to inspect and interact with capital equipment and manufacturing processes, including the ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, and work in various positions as needed.
  • The position requires the ability to navigate the manufacturing environment safely, including walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, and standing or walking for extended periods.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to visually inspect equipment, components, and work areas, as well as perform computer-based tasks.
  • Ability to wear and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, and other protective equipment as required by the work environment.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to moderate levels of noise, vibration, odors, dust, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to follow all applicable health, safety, and environmental requirements, including established safety procedures, PPE requirements, and emergency response protocols.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.

Mechanical EngineerStatus: Fulltime Exempt

Travel: Occasional travel.
