Assistant Manager, Retail Operations

ABOUT THE LUCAS MUSEUM OF NARRATIVE ART
Opening in September 2026, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is dedicated to illustrated storytelling. Founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the museum’s collection features works by artists including Norman Rockwell, Kadir Nelson, Jessie Willcox Smith, N. C. Wyeth, Beatrix Potter, Judith F. Baca, Frida Kahlo, and Maxfield Parrish; as well as comic art legends such as Winsor McCay, Jack Kirby, Frank Frazetta, Alison Bechdel, Chris Ware, and R. Crumb; and photographers Gordon Parks, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Dorothea Lange. The Museum also houses the Lucas Archives, containing models, props, concept art, and costumes from Lucas’s filmmaking career.
Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD with a landscape by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA, the Museum is in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, on an 11-acre campus that includes new green space and a 300,000-square-foot building with galleries, two theaters, a library, restaurant, café, retail store, and community spaces.
POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Retail, the Assistant Manager, Retail Operations serves as the operational lead and primary backup to the Retail Manager, supporting the daily management of retail operations to ensure an efficient, organized, and customer-focused environment. This role oversees key operational functions, including opening and closing procedures, cash handling, inventory management, replenishment, fulfillment coordination, loss prevention, and compliance with retail policies and procedures.

Working closely with the Retail Manager, the Assistant Manager supports sales performance, operational efficiency, staffing coordination, and workflow optimization while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. This role also partners cross-functionally to maintain operational readiness, effective communication, and a collaborative retail culture aligned with organizational values and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging principles.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support the Retail Manager in overseeing daily retail operations to ensure efficient, organized, and customer-focused execution

  • Serve as the acting lead in the absence of the Retail Manager, overseeing store operations, staff supervision, and operational decision-making

  • Supervise, coach, and support frontline retail staff, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and service-driven team culture

  • Monitor daily sales performance, labor utilization, and operational workflows to support revenue and efficiency goals

  • Oversee opening and closing procedures, cash handling, deposits, POS operations, and compliance with financial controls and retail policies

  • Support inventory management processes, including replenishment, stock organization, cycle counts, receiving, transfers, and loss prevention practices

  • Coordinate fulfillment and operational support for in-store, online, and special order requests as applicable

  • Ensure the sales floor, stockroom, and operational areas are maintained to brand, safety, and housekeeping standards

  • Partner with Visual Merchandising and Customer Experience teams to support seamless store presentation and guest engagement

  • Assist with staff onboarding, training, scheduling coordination, and performance support to ensure operational readiness

  • Address operational challenges, customer concerns, and escalated issues with professionalism and sound judgment

  • Maintain compliance with organizational policies, health and safety standards, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging principles

  • Support operational reporting, communication, and administrative tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3–5 years of progressive retail operations or supervisory experience, preferably for an arts&culturalinstitutionorprominent consumer brand

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Demonstrated experience supporting day-to-day store operations, frontline service delivery, and team performance in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong knowledge of retail operations, including POS systems, cash handling, inventory control, replenishment, and operational procedures

  • Proven ability to lead teams, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple operational demands in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills with attention to detail

  • Excellent communication, judgment, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve customer and operational issues professionally and effectively

  • Ability to analyze operational and sales performance to support business goals and process improvements

  • Commitment to delivering exceptional customer service and fostering an inclusive guest and employee experience

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and retail management or POS systems

  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move merchandise and supplies up to 30 pounds as required by operational needs
