Position Overview

Earlham College seeks a motivated candidate to collaborate with faculty and staff on effective course design and the implementation of instructional technologies to support undergraduate and graduate level programs. The Instructional Designer and Technologist will play a central role in advancing two institutional priorities: the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into teaching and learning, and the accessibility of all digital learning environments.

This position is supervised by the Library's Instructional Technologies Director. They will also work closely with Earlham School of Religion (ESR) and their partner institution, Bethany Theological Seminary, to support their graduate programs, which include hybrid and online courses

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Provides support, training, and documentation for the Moodle learning management system, Kaltura video platform, survey systems (Qualtrics & Survey Monkey), campus AI tools, and other academic technologies in collaboration with an existing academic technology support team. Create engaging tutorials on the use of instructional technologies.
  2. Support campus efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into teaching, learning, and scholarship. Develop and maintain AI usage resources (written guides, video tutorials, and reference documentation) for faculty, staff, and students. Partner with faculty to design assignments and assessments that account for AI tools, and contribute to institutional guidance on the responsible and ethical use of AI in coursework.
  3. Demonstrate strong teaching skills, including the ability to design student, faculty, and staff workshops and learning experiences. Work closely with librarians, Information Technology, the Teaching and Learning Consultant, and other campus units to provide professional development for faculty.
  4. Collaborate with faculty one-on-one to match pedagogical goals with the appropriate course design and educational technology tools, drawing on instructional design models (e.g. backward design) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Support faculty in course revisions and troubleshooting. Support the launch of new majors and departments needing course templates.
  5. Lead accessibility efforts across digital learning environments. Configure and maintain accessibility settings and tools within Moodle; train faculty and facilitate workshops on accessible course design (WCAG and ADA standards); assist with course remediation.
  6. Support course quality assurance, including course reviews aligned with institutional standards, accessibility guidelines, and best practices for regular and substantive interaction in online and hybrid courses.
  7. Assess instructional technology systems, trends, and user needs. Provide support to departments using Moodle for assessment purposes.
  8. Stay current with emerging tools, pedagogies, accessibility, and AI developments.
  9. Conduct vigorous outreach with faculty, students, and staff from Earlham, ESR, and Bethany Theological Seminary to promote available services and surface emerging needs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, library/information science, or relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in higher education settings.
  • Knowledge of new instructional technologies and trends, including AI.
  • Experience with instructional design models, principles, and learning theories, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and backward design.
  • Familiarity with digital accessibility standards (WCAG, ADA/Section 508) and experience creating or remediating content for accessibility.
  • Experience designing and supporting online and hybrid courses, including familiarity with practices related to regular and substantive interaction and copyright in online learning.

Strong project management, communication, and consultation skills, with the ability to work effectively with faculty across disciplines and modalities.
