JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant (MA)/ Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN supports specialty clinic providers in the care of surgical patients, with a primary focus on orthopedic and general surgery consults and follow-up visits. Working within their scope of practice and under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Independent Practitioner (L.I.P.) or Specialty Clinic Director, this position assists with patient intake, rooming, vital signs, medication and history updates, coordination of testing and follow-up care, procedure support, and patient education. This role is also expected to assist with wound care and related treatment needs as directed, while helping maintain efficient patient flow and accurate documentation throughout the clinic day.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION

  1. Maintains an organized, professional clinic environment to support efficient care delivery for specialty clinic providers and patients.
  2. Assists orthopedic and general surgery providers, including advanced practice providers, with patient care during surgical consultations, pre-operative visits, and post-operative follow-up appointments.
  3. Reviews schedules and helps ensure timely patient flow through the specialty clinic.
  4. Coordinates patient care activities related to surgical preparation and follow-up, including scheduling tests, obtaining records, and facilitating referrals as directed.
  5. Greets, rooms, and prepares patients for examination or procedures, including obtaining vital signs, chief complaint, allergies, and updating medication, medical, surgical, family, and social histories as needed.
  6. Documents patient information, provider communications, and care provided accurately in the electronic medical record.
  7. Assists providers and support staff during examinations and office-based procedures within scope of practice.
  8. Performs prescribed clinical procedures as directed and within scope, including dressing changes, suture or staple removal, cast or splint removal, and wound care support.
  9. Assists with wound assessment support, wound care treatment, and patient education related to wound care as directed by the provider.
  10. Schedules patient testing and instructs patients in preparation for procedures, tests, surgery, and follow-up care according to provider direction, using approved educational materials when applicable.
  11. Under the direction of the provider and after competency completion, administers and documents ordered medications and injections, following required guidelines and documentation standards.
  12. Answers patient questions, manages telephone communications with provider guidance, returns calls as appropriate, and documents communications in the medical record.
  13. Maintains tracking systems for abnormal test results, referrals, and follow-up appointments to support continuity of surgical care.
  14. Ensures pre-operative labs, consents, history and physical documentation, and referrals are directed to the appropriate departments in a timely manner.
  15. Cleans and disinfects instruments per standardized procedures and maintains clean, stocked, and orderly exam and procedure rooms.
  16. Works collaboratively with ancillary departments and clinic staff to support patient care, scheduling, and operational needs.
  17. Demonstrates flexibility, protects patient confidentiality, maintains required competencies, and attends meetings, trainings, and in-services as required.
  18. Performs all other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Must have one of the following:
    1. Current license to practice as an LPN in Wisconsin.
    2. Current AAMA or CCMA certification or eligible to become certified preferred.
  2. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS certified.
  3. Prior clinic experience preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
  3. Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform essential professional nursing/patient care practice.
  4. Must have received proper training and maintain established competency levels to perform essential drug and breath alcohol testing procedures.
  5. Must have proficient computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment.
  6. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress, with minimal supervision, and to exercise initiative and judgment in analyzing, organizing, planning, prioritizing, scheduling and coordinating work with others.
  7. Needs to possess as high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
  2. The LPN/MA is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The LPN/MA is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  3. The LPN/MA must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  5. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
  6. Computer/keyboard skills required. Must have the ability to operate in a Windows environment.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as infectious/communicable diseases, noise, blood and bloodborne diseases, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, odors, gases, dusts, and physical injury/verbal abuse from an out-of-control patient. Frequent exposure to distressed patients, families or visitors. Must be able to function effectively under stressful situations.
