The Evergreen School, an independent school serving highly capable students in preschool through 8th grade, is currently accepting applications for a Long Term Substitute- Early Childhood and Primary Division Learning Specialist
POSITION OVERVIEW
Evergreen is seeking an engaging and compassionate educator to join our team of learning specialists. We are looking for someone with a passion for working with students who have learning differences and for supporting them through strengths-based, targeted instructional strategies. The learning specialist position is responsible for leading, collaborating, and co-teaching with teachers in grades PS-3. They develop and provide specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with learning needs and evaluate and assess student progress against instructional objectives. They serve as the ILP Case Manager for students in grades PS-3. With a highly collaborative approach to teaching, the learning specialist will provide early intervention for young learners and teach an engaging and challenging program to highly capable students with individual learning styles and needs, utilizing a wide range of instructional tools and resources.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilize assessment data and standardized test data to identify student needs and work with classroom teachers to develop a support plan to meet the needs of students, both with early intervention and extension.
- Implement and teach small targeted intervention groups and track growth and development.
- Teach a 3rd-grade literacy support group for students with literacy-based learning challenges.
- Interpret and implement educational evaluations.
- Develop and implement Individualized Learning Plans (ILP) for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special educational needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the related services required to meet those goals. Assess student progress and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
- Coordinate the delivery of accommodations associated with each student's ILP as needed.
- Schedule team meetings and work cooperatively with student support team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
- Create a positive learning experience with emphasis on data-informed instruction using appropriate sources, including online resources.
- Conduct the process for educational evaluations and reevaluations.
- Collaborate and consult with educational professionals.
- Support Preschool and Pre-K teachers in the collection, organization, and sharing of assessment data to inform instructional planning and support student growth.
- Collaborate with teaching teams to analyze assessment information and use findings to guide responsive curriculum decisions and individualized support strategies.
- Provide consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom accommodations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with divergent learning needs.
- Serve as a liaison with parents, guardians, faculty, and division heads about student learning and academic support.
- Provide education on relevant learning resource topics to faculty in small groups, as well as in larger meetings.
- Stay up to date with best practices and work with teachers to implement these practices in the classroom.
- Develop and implement a culturally responsive curriculum for students. This may include building upon students’ prior knowledge and experience and having students work collaboratively, among other strategies.
- Regularly assess students’ progress by observing and evaluating performance.
- Communicate regularly with the relevant people (advisors, learning support specialists, counselors, division heads, and parents) about student progress.
- Establish and enforce school rules for students with a positive style and strong classroom management skills.
- Attend school, department, team, and parent meetings, including school Open Houses.
- Participate in certain extracurricular events, such as social and sporting activities, admission events, clubs, overnight camps, and student group activities. Position duties can include occasional evening or weekend work.

Qualifications:

- Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with teaching credentials. Master’s degree and WA Teaching Certificate preferred.
- Two to three years’ experience teaching in a lead role, experience as a special education/learning specialist preferred.
- Knowledge and experience in working with children with ADHD, ASD, language-based learning differences, and behavioral and emotional disabilities
- Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of academic intervention and specialty areas.
- Thorough understanding of effective teaching methodology for students with learning differences.
- Ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior, adhering to school rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Skilled in analyzing needs and problems objectively and effectively.
- Able to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and the school community.
- Proficient in delivering oral presentations and written reports in English.
- Ability to create and implement an inclusive curriculum.
- Skilled in differentiating instruction to challenge highly capable and twice-exceptional students appropriately.
- Technologically inclined and proficient in educational applications, blended learning platforms, and strategies.
- Willingness to learn and adopt new digital technologies to improve learning outcomes.
- Clear and effective communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues in an independent school setting.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and integrity while building constructive working relationships.
- Strong time management skills to meet assignments and deadlines.

Working Conditions:
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds in connection with job duties such as assisting with classroom setup or moving materials.
- Ability to stand, sit, and move comfortably throughout classrooms and school hallways for extended periods.
- Ability to climb stairs, navigate uneven surfaces, and escort students as needed between locations within and outside school buildings.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including inclement weather.
- Evening and weekend work may be required at times
Position Details:
This is a full-time temporary position that is not eligible for benefits beginning August 26, 2026 through March 19, 2027. This position will be expected to work in person Monday-Friday. The position will be paid a pro-rated portion of an annual salary in the range of $71,500 to $123,920 per year, depending on degree(s) and years of experience.
