ABOUT WASHINGTON MONTESSORI SCHOOL

Washington Montessori School is an independent, coeducational day school serving students in preschool through Grade 8. Our program is rooted in Montessori principles and is committed to developing the whole child — intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Washington Montessori School is seeking a motivated high school or college student with an interest in landscaping and grounds maintenance to support garden upkeep and landscape enhancement projects on campus this summer. This is a hands-on learning opportunity ideal for students with an interest in gardening, carpentry and general grounds work.

The intern will work under the guidance of school staff, gaining exposure to plant care skills, and techniques for maintaining and repairing outdoor structures, play features and other outdoor elements. Anticipated dates of work will be late June until late August, with a schedule of approximately 30 hours per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform routine garden maintenance, including:

    • Weeding garden beds and landscaped areas

    • Watering plants and monitoring soil moisture

    • Pruning shrubs and perennials as directed

  • Assist with installation and care of new plantings

  • Support basic garden upkeep tasks such as mulching, edging, and debris removal

  • Perform maintenance work on outdoor furniture and play equipment

  • Maintain tools and work areas in a clean, safe condition

  • Complete other tasks to enhance and maintenance the school’s outdoor environment, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current high school or college student (preference for students enrolled in plant science, agriculture, or environmental programs)

  • Interest in landscaping or facilities & grounds

  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

  • Ability to perform physical tasks (bending, lifting light materials, standing for extended periods)

  • Reliable, self-motivated, and able to follow directions

  • Prior gardening experience is a plus

HOW TO APPLY

Please submit a brief statement of interest (a few paragraphs is sufficient) outlining your interest in landscape or maintenance work, along with any relevant coursework or experience. Include your availability for the summer.
